| EDIT: You may say that this all a bunch of bubkis and that this song is about something very concrete. But I feel that most great art doesn't come from the small intellect -- it comes from the Source within all of us, a wellspring of infinite creativity and wisdom. As such, especially when lyrics are written with so much generality, the Divine could be using the lyricist as an instrument to express something far beyond what he intended. I feel that there are patterns in this creation, and if we observe something simple and describe it generally but accurately, those descriptions can be Truth itself and not mere facts. | |

This song seems to me like it's all about the spiritual path. Anyway we're all on the spiritual path whether we want to be or not, but it sounds to me like the way a more conscious seeker would respond to life. "This could be the very minute I'm aware I'm alive All these places feel like home" This sounds like the author is approaching his enlightenment. In my reading and limited experience, it is a feeling of great awareness and at-home-ness. "With a name I'd never chosen I can make my first steps As a child of 25" Many spiritual traditions talk about some phenomenon of rebirth -- a new beginning -- upon the moment of spiritual blossoming. Old patterns are cut asunder and an new personality, influenced by past experience but never bound by it -- emerges. Many people are given a new name by their Guru at this time. "This is the straw, final straw In the roof of my mouth as I lie to you Just because I'm sorry doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it at the time" The last two lines of this stanza describe a general type of sin to me. There are some mistakes we make that we already know are really wrong -- these types of sins can even feel bad at the time. But then there's certain sins that we make which are at the cusp of our existential realization -- such sins we don't honestly understand at the moment, but only truly regret later once they come back to bite us. I feel, anyway. "You're the only thing that I love It scares me more every day On my knees I think clearer" I believe that that the first line here describes God or the spiritual Master. Once we advance on the path, I feel we begin to see Him/Her in everything. Love and fear are both emotions emanating from the heart chakra. That would explain why love can be so scary sometimes -- when we pursue love, life forces us to confront all our fears. It's not that we're scared of the warm, fuzzy feeling itself -- that would make no sense -- we're just scared of where it will lead us. The last line, I think, is pretty clear. Praying lets him transcend the intellect and access a wiser, bigger consciousness. "Goodness knows I saw it coming Or at least I'll claim I did But in truth I'm lost for words" Again the sages and my own limited experience tells me that words aren't sufficient to describe enlightenment. No matter how beautifully someone who knows speaks to one about it, one is totally awestruck when one gets a taste of it. We may have some intuitions about it beforehand, but the phenomenon hits us like a ton of bricks anyway. "What have I done? It's too late for that" This sounds to me like the speaker has erred, but the situation has changed to where that error is no longer easily rectifiable. "What have I become? Truth is nothing yet" One perspective is that you're either fully enlightened and safe from a spiritual fall or you're not. As long as one hasn't reached the goal, there's always a chance of suffering again. "A simple mistake starts the hardest time" The way I see it, it's not that the mistake is simple. It's just that at the time, we don't feel it's a big deal -- like one drink leads to two, leads to five, leads to a car wreck and serious health problems or injuring other people. Every action, positive or negative, brings consequences -- like Newton's laws applied to spirituality. Even then the Divine is very forgiving -- it usually gives us plenty of chances to repent and change on our own. But when we don't, it gives us the stick (punishment) so that we have to grow. "I promise I'll do anything you ask this time" It sounds to me like this experience has brought some sincerity in the speaker. Now that his window for righteous action has closed, he is counting the seconds until he gets his chance to redeem himself. |
