Cake – You Turn The Screws Lyrics 13 years ago
I definitely see what you're saying with the political angle- Cake is political as well. However I do not American government controls the world. I believe most and nearly all politicians must sell them self completely to attain a bigger better slice. Corporate agenda and the oldest of old money- those with infinite resources- are the real screw turners in the world.

Cake – You Turn The Screws Lyrics 13 years ago
V Cake you turn the screws interp

Tearing down the bridge could be a multiple reference lyric- The way business destroys things held together seemingly flimsy in the context of business- such as a band. Also the bridge of a song- wrecking the creativity of artists.

twisting the knife then going home to kiss your wife can mean how its just business at the end of the day for them. such as the way selling america out in many ways in merely business to the elite businessmen and politicians of every country but especially "capitalist" elite who don't desire free market but control. Red, white and blue- many Cake songs call out the corporate agenda of America.

Selling it to japan is selling the product of business to those who don't care about the politics and only see the plastic surface. Followed by one liners "its natural" "punk rock" "red white and blue" foreigners and businessmen often use simple small sentences during a sales pitch to create a theme for what they're selling or because they simply don't know exactly what it is.

"You think that I, must turn them too" Refers to how opportunists believe that everyone is on their "come up" and trying to get a "bigger better slice" at all costs regardless of the price.

"You think that I must be so satisfied" could refer to how the opportunist views those they see as not taking the biggest slice as suckers, well off, or content with some thing else- mainly suckers though.

"I stay inside I wonder why" could refer to the feeling of knowing youre getting played, maybe you don't play dirty games for moral reasons, yet you see how easy it is to get that slice and play their game.

Cake – Open Book Lyrics 13 years ago
Just one of many possible interpretations as Cake is masterful at playing words

This song talks about how men believe they pull chicks because women are powerless to them but females also have "game" which can be devious at times. The initial lyrics are seem to refer to both a plot and sex. "Caught in your own glory" can be believing in your own ego also not seeing the other perspective such as potential devious female plans as you have sex. "Writing your own headlines- ...Now you've gotta write them all again." This can be a reference to how you pitch events as if you have masterminded everything but when things turn bad or if the female played you hard then you must once again appear to be in control even though the problem is not resolved and what you have said before no longer makes sense.

"Shes an open book but you dont know which page to turn to"
Open book of course is a play on words in at least 3 ways in this songs. Open book as in heart on sleeves, honest good girl- easy to read, also the book lyrics in this song, and also sexuality in this song. Not knowing which page to turn refers to her appearance being open yet being confusing or misleading once past the facade.

The next lyric set can also be sexual and the parlor's hardwood floor may be a book reference I can not pin right now.

Over all I think this song is about a guy who either/or has ego problems and has been played.
