I asked Animal Kingdom's lead singer, Richard Sauberlich, who wrote this song about it's meaning. We talked about the style of Bob Dylan with flashes of imagery in songs like Visions Of Joanna and biblical meaning such as All Along the Watchtower. He wanted to write a song like that. The lyrics came to him over the course of a year, a line or so at a time. He had way more than he needed and picked from the lines to pull together the song, discarding the rest. Mephistopheles is a demon featured in German folklore. He originally appeared in literature as the demon in the Faust legend (a highly successful scholar dissatisfied with his life, and so makes a deal with the devil, exchanging his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures), and he has since appeared in other works as the Devil. |
