Byzantine – Hatfield Lyrics 13 years ago
One of the first Byzantine songs ever written. The lyrics cover a broad scope of WV history with a focus on the Hatfield and McCoy war. I am not from Hatfield, VA. I am from Chapmanville, WV which is in the same county the Haftield clan was from.
There are references to my childhood, mainly the gas huffing that I did in Jr. High. Stupid thing to do, really, but it's there.
Reference to Poncho Villa, whom my grandfather rode with in Mexico when he was just a teenager. And a picket line reference for my families history in coal mining. The 1882 reference is the date when the Hatfield McCoy war really took off and made headlines. The state was actually born in 1863.

The last two stanza's are just a play on a cool line I saw when I attended my first AA meetings when I was in my 20's. I saw on a poster "Excuses are just tools of incompetence, Used to build monuments of nothingness". I added the last two lines to complete the verse.

Byzantine – Absolute Horizon Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is basically a decree of how messed up the world is and that we are upon the end of days. Absolute Horizon is basically the boundary of a black hole.
The first 2 lines is a direct quote from one of the final scenes in the movie "The Thornbirds"
Driven To The Thorn, Unaware of The Dying To Come

There are also references to the band Godflesh, with their song "Christ Bait Rising" and a reference to my fascination with aliens with the term Annunaki. Fun tune.

Byzantine – Five Faces of Madness Lyrics 13 years ago
And yes, there are 4 lines which reference "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"...
There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction we are going
Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing
This song is sung from the viewpoint of an inmate who has went mad

Byzantine – Five Faces of Madness Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is about the Weston Insane Asylum, which is also called the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. It was in operation from 1864 until 1994 and housed many emotionally disturbed men and women. Our lead guitarist, Tony Rohrbough, worked their as an orderly for a year or so before it shut down. The story is that the building, which has 5 sides, has 5 faces carved in stone, done by an inmate. The faces are of various stages of delirium, hence the term Five Faces of Madness. The asylum is now a tourist attraction for paranormal activity groups. The band rehearses at Rohrbough's home in Weston, and can look directly down the hill upon the Weston Asylum.

Byzantine – Centurion Lyrics 13 years ago
Lyrically one of my favs. This song is about a few different things mixed into one. It covers the concept of hard nosed men from WV going from their lives of Coal Mining into even harder lives to serve the military. In the 2nd verse is the line "My Cousin Now Martyred" is a direct quote talking about my 1st cousin, who happened to be only 9 months younger than me, being killed in the Iraq war by an IED. The last 2 lines are in Latin and reads as follows...
Mountaineers are always free, Mountaineers are always prepared.

Byzantine – Brundlefly Lyrics 13 years ago
Nothing fancy here. Just written about the beautifully horrific movie remake "The Fly". Seth Brundle plus common housefly equals Brundlefly.

Byzantine – Ancestry of the Antichrist Lyrics 13 years ago
This song was completely written in response to the Bush administration and it's mishandlings of the Iraq conflict. The first line hints at George W. Bush, 2nd verse talks about Bush's contract company Halliburton, and also hints at the southern accent of the antichrist. Probably my top 5 favorite musically written songs by Byzantine.

Byzantine – A Residual Haunting Lyrics 13 years ago
You can also see certain hints to the bands demise like the whole last spoken part as well as the term "Swan Song" used in the 2nd verse.

Byzantine – A Residual Haunting Lyrics 13 years ago
The meaning behind this song is a lyrical interpretation of how the band was feeling about it's ultimate demise. The song was put last on the album to feel like an epitaph to the bands career. Byzantine broke up the day after the album was released. A Residual Haunting is a term used for memories that have imprinted themselves into the fabric of their surroundings, forever to be replayed over and over. This song was pretty much a lyrical farewell.
