Bruce Springsteen – Racing in the Street Lyrics 11 years ago
I find the song far darker than most commenters here.

"She sits on the porch of her daddy's house
But all her pretty dreams are torn
She stares off alone into the night
With the eyes of one who hates for just being born"

That's pretty heavy stuff. If he wanted to say that she was tired of her lover racing, or something similar, he could have not made such harsh words. "...hates for just being born..." - doesn't get much harsher than that.

She once enjoyed the racing life but she's moved on/grown up/gotten cynical - as many of the characters in BS's songs. Her lover is going to try to give her hope again by going to the sea - the water being a rebirth for them both.

The delivery of the song is sparse and downbeat - it's not an ode to racers, it's a testament to the sadness behind the racers.

I'm surprised there aren't more comments about this song - I find it one of the more obvious expressions of Springsteen's philosophy. Maybe it's that - it's too obvious what he's saying, less subtle than most of his works. He's leaving little doubt about his view of what it's like to be a working class American: "Factory takes his hearing, factory gives him life... and "Men walk through these gates with death in their eyes..."

And the threat of violence toward the protagonist's children at the end is downright chilling.

Bruce Springsteen – County Fair Lyrics 11 years ago
GREAT review. This is one of my favorite Springsteen songs. I can see every verse in my mind - the result of a childhood of county fairs, no doubt. He captures the essence of the experience perfectly. "...hope I can remember where our car's parked..." - who has been to a fair and doesn't remember that feeling! All of it - beautifully written.

I look at the last lines differently - I think they apply to both people - "I break above the waves" to me is a reference to the shock waves of setting off a bomb. The bomber does set the bomb off - and feels the impact of the waves. The second person, the lover - does she do it? I'm not sure. She feels the sun upon her face, but perhaps that's in "paradise", not certain. But rivers don't have much in the way of waves, which makes me think of the waves as bomb-related.

Anyway, love this song. Can listen to it 10x in a row easily. A beautiful, haunting portrayal of conflict and an amazingly sympathetic view of a suicide bomber. As someone else said, "Plastics, wire and your kiss" - what an evocative image that calls to mind. Incredible lyrics.

Love your take on the "black river" - thank you for that. I wonder if the mother lost her child? "...eternity on your lips" makes me wonder.
