If there is a quintessential theme song for the 1980s, it is this. All the pretentions, competition for status, conspicuous consumption and need to put on an "image" and "dress to kill"--yeah that was the 80s more than any other decade in my lifetime (born late 60s). I just bought the It's Hard CD recently, which I had on vinyl once long ago back when it came out. I liked the album then, but hearing it again looking back--it was a very 80s album, covering yuppiedom ("Eminence Front") to the cynical break from earlier, now compromised idealism ("Why Did I Fall For That" and especially "Cry If You Want") to the real fear then of nuclear war ("I've Known No War" and again "Why Did I Fall For That"). Made me strangely nostalgic for the decade, although I also loathed that decade even while growing up in it. Good album, and "Eminence Front" is its excellent centerpiece. |

| Donovan – There Is A Mountain Lyrics

"There is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is" kind of reminds me of driving through the Appalachians--long strips of mountain running parallel to each other. so you cross one mountain, then go through a valley, then cross another mountain. When the Allman Brothers from Georgia (sort of) covered it ("Mountain Jam") I especially thought that could be what the chorus is referring to--which would fit with the underground railroad thing.
Yeah it's probably the Zen or whatever thing really--that's what the hippies were really into in the 60s--but the song made me think of driving through West Virginia, mountain, no mountain, mountain, no mountain, over and over--but a fun ride. |

Yeah, I took the "hearing aid" item (along with the "scar") to mean a tough old guy who got into a lot of fights and probably had a big old cauliflower ear (and some hearing damage) from blows to the head. |

I think I read somewhere that Becker and Fagen did intend this to be a song promoting condom use (and actually stated as much).... But I still like to interpret it as a song about someone with a weird fetish and the need to roleplay a certain way to get off ("I wanna be your holy man")--makes it a funny song to me, and more in keeping with the band's general wry sense of humor which I've come to love about them. Somehow public service announcements (even subtle ones) seem out of character for them. |
