This sounds very much like the type of struggle someone with borderline personality would go through. People who weren't able to develop a sense of consistent emotional attachment as children, grow up and tend to have issues with their sense of self and emotional attachment. As a result they have very tumultuous adult relationships where, as soon as they feel incredibly close to someone, they start to fear the person will leave them and instead close their hearts up to avoid future pain. Even if their lover has consistently shown that he or she wants to be there, the sufferer will push because of that fear. Usually its a self-fulfilling prophecy, and when the significant other finally is cut out of the sufferer's life (often against the lover's will), her suspicions of eventual abandonment are concerned and she is overcome with guilt and her self esteem is hurt. It is a very dark cycle, but a cycle that can be reversed. I feel for anyone involved in this cycle. Seems like this song is about that cycle. Sad, but know that people do recover from borderline attachment issues :0) |

This song is about someone who is looking for fulfillment. Over time, he became less idealistic and more of a 'realist,' but found that wasn't satisfying ("I stopped dreaming, now I'm supposed to fill it up with somethin'"). When he looks himself in the eye or falls asleep, he sees somebody he used to know - an animal that isn't constrained. In the song, our narrator limits his own thinking / potential to fit in / not seem like an absurd idealist (ie- going after money... I change shapes just to hide in this place), only to find these pursuits unfulfilling. Everyone's trying to get back to their original state of mind - young, idealistic, filled with potential (but i'm still, im still an animal). Don't lose your animal! Stay hungry, stay foolish. |
