I've studied these lyrics in and out and there's a lot of disagreements on the lyrics themselves being sung. So here is the closest I have gotten to the correct words: I'm looking for you in the woods tonight, I'm looking, looking for you with my flashlight, searching, from in the high or down in the ocean, and I face myself in reason; cane the wolf, cane the wolf Conjure me as a child, slipping down a wet slide, stretch up I cannot reach him, jumping up they drag him from the water. or watch them march him into life or watch them take him from the pail, into the sky for your Eagle Eye; the Sun, seeds, a sickle, and a scythe. Ridicule they won't allow, quench your thirst and let love flower, rip the cage out of your chest; let the chaos fool the rest. Show without showing, what you know without knowing; twigs snap; I catch no canoe, only you and me alone on the old, teal sea. Dissolving who we are, call out for yesterday's destiny; gone, we're on foreign shore. It was your mark of falling, I was the car still running, and when you call I'll be your shield for life, and if you feel it you will fly, the sunset above me, and I was set to fall in, as I was set to fall in. -- Now this song is very special to me, I believe that the meaning is simply that this girl loves a military man (into the sky for your Eagle Eye) and she's willing to wait for him (and when you call I'll be your shield for life), but isn't quite sure yet that he will love her as well when the time comes (and *if* you feel it you will fly). She thinks she's dumb for waiting but she can't help it (cane the wolf; the wolf being those feelings she can't control). She has negative feelings towards the military because she thinks it makes people unresponsive and unloving(rip the cage out of your chest), like her father may have been (conjure me as a child; she's regressing into her younger memories of reaching up for her father) And all of the lyrics support my statement quite well but as always, it's up for interpretation. This is my take on it, though. |

I think most people take it too literally, because a couple phrases really stand out to me that make it seem to lean much more strongly towards it being about a girl, but that he's just using a horse to symbolize her wild, freedom-loving quality. To go into it: "When you lifted the lid off of my pumpkin head And kissed me goodnight" -I don't think a horse would do that. "Should it be a thorn in my side We never quite broke that horse" -Basically, she's the one that got away and it should bother him. Should. But he just cares about her so much, he's kinda happy she's free. "Bundle up and come with me now Down the road to the burnt down barn We could make a blanket of coats And breathe our souls into the neighbours front lawn" -Remeniscing about the adventures they've had. "But oh god that look in your eye Trouble that does not search words" -I think when people say things like that, it's about the person they fell for. A look in their eyes (: "It sprung from the biblical vine And are waiting to return to the dirt" -I wouldn't know exactly what part of the bible this references to, but the closest thing to it I can remember is the part of the bible where the seeds that fall on the dirt are the ones that survive (others fall in thorns, or rock, etc. and die) so maybe he's waiting for the words he spoke to sink in and maybe bring her back when she realizes he cares. (It makes more sense in my mind) "The stitches in your winter clothes Your cello bows We stole your hair to make them" -She may have been poor and sold her hair? "We're sorry for the iron shoes We nailed to you And stuck you in the rain alone" -I think "we" is referring to the guys who've hurt her. Tried to keep her in their jealousy and possessiveness, but then at the same time are unwilling to stand by her side when she needs them. "You sprinted away, sprinted away To where I don't know" -She's finally leaving. Definitely had enough. "God's moving in your bloodstream Where the cross beats aren't so slow" -He can picture her happy, and free, and so full of life. Just glowing. "You swept all the red from my cheeks I didn't hear you come back inside" -For some reason I don't think he would get that flushed look of surprise and fear from seeing a horse inside his house. Maybe it was a ghost. Since the Album is titled Ghosts. "But oh god that curve in your spine A question mark A doctor sign was framed by the windowsill" -So he saw her ghost in perfect wholeness, but her silhouette still shows the curve in her spine, which could be a broken back, or scoliosis, and the "doctor's sigh" references to the day she died. "And you saw something I did not in the night" -He could be saying she was looking at something that wasn't visible to him, like the light at the end of the tunnel. He was the last person she wanted to visit before going into the afterlife. So that's just my take on it. All I know for sure is that this beautiful song touches my heart. Makes me want to cry, but smile at the same time. It's just lovely. |

| To me, it seems as though it's about someone who just has a savage desire to conquer all that seems beyond reach. When the man acts as if his attention is too precious for her, she goes on this "hunt" to get everything, but once she has his heart, she'll just rip it up cause all she wanted was the chase, the conquer, the defeat. God, I love this song... Anywho, personally, I always thought this song was speaking of how heavy of a burden she is on her lover, because of all her faults, fears, and issues. She loves him and therefore doesn't want him to suffer for her, even if he's willing... She wonders if it's possible for him to stay strong for both of them because she can't be strong enough for herself. |

A few small corrections, in the fourth stanza, it's "-Well,- tell her that I miss our little talks" and "We used to play outside when -we- were young" And in the nineth stanza, "-You're gone, gone, gone- away, I -watched- you disappear" and "Just let me go, we'll -meet again soon-" ...So yeah... Great song:3 I -think- it's about two bestfriends who grew up together and they both have a secret love for each other but don't know if it's returned and so they grow up and grow apart but still love each other.... or something... just my guess o: |
