| The Jackson 5 – Show You the Way to Go Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I've tried to change one lyric without success yet. At the end of the verse which starts, 'Just put your trust in me', he later says, not 'but only we can work this out' - he actually says, 'but only we can wear the crown' which is what is sounds like and rhymes with the earlier word 'down'. Plus in at least two videos I have seen, he taps his head upon saying the word 'crown'. | |
| Coldplay – Spies Lyrics | 12 years ago |

Whatever the precise details for the inspiration of this song, the great thing about it is that everyone can relate to it. To me, someone in this song has lost their mind, i.e. experienced psychosis which most of the time is caused by sleep deprivation. Many of the things others have referred to can be the catalyst and if drugs are involved they are just incidental. You can become psychotic with no drugs involved at all. The experience of psychosis is like your mind being deprogrammed. Like wiping off all the crap from a computer hard drive. 'What do I know, show me the right way to go' might refer to not knowing much any more having realized your head has been filled with a lot of garbage. Socrates apparently said that the wisest man is he who knows he knows nothing. I believe this song is more of an observation about other people. He says 'I awake' but in the very next line, he asks how do 'you' live as a fugitive. To me that means, he has had some kind of spiritual awakening rather than waking from sleep and sees how others are living, i.e. with no peace of mind, as fugitives and as virtual slaves because he sees no one is free. However he certainly knows what it's like to be 'down here' and not being able to sleep from fear. Every emotion we have is driven by either love or fear. The song ends positively, not driven by the metaphorical spies in the water, which I think are anything that scares us. You can always sort your head out and decide to be driven by the lovely things in life even though you will still see people operating on fear all around you. I think the rest of the album fits in with this interpretation. |
