| Your ideas got me thinking. Perhaps "envy is the bond between the hopeful and the damned" is to connect the Island to the beholder. He saw the green, and green represents the spring innocence and the veiwer feels damned; envious. Envy is the bond that links the two; which would also explain the "quicknes of the eye decieves the mind" Envy is like the electron that is bonding the hopeful and damned. Just a meeting point in the middle no matter which side feels the envy or owns it. St. Perpetua was once a prostitute and upon seeing a bishop shed tears over her wasted beauty she converted and became a saint. I believe Roger saw this island in a similiar way. When the envy gets shared like an electron bonds are made. | |
