The Smiths – Sheila Take a Bow Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't know if anyone will agree with me, but I always understood this song to be a sort of feminist cry.
If you listen to what the words mean, they're saying, "Do what's unexpected! Don't just follow with what you're 'supposed' to do, be a change." Sheila wants to "live on her own", in other words, live independently, support herself. She is "not always glad", which means she isn't just satisfied with what she is and what she will become, she wants more, she wants to be more.
Then in the end, when it says, "I'm a girl and you're a boy", I think it's supposed to mean that our gender doesn't matter, whether I'm a girl or you are, whether you're a boy or I am, we're the same, and we can be happy together ("Off we stride").

I agree that it's not about women. I think that "head in the conjugal bed" does not refer to the head on the shoulders.....

The Smiths – The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't really think this song has a "real" meaning. Of course, it means something to Morrissey, but I think trying to discover what that meaning is is a waste of time. I think it's much more important to understand it in your own way, to form your own opinion and meaning to it.
To me, this song is about someone trying to comfort a fearful friend or someone they care deeply for. And while the narrator has done bad things, it doesn't change how much he cares about "the child". The relationship has to stay secret though, possibly for fear of disapproval and forced separation. "The child" loves the narrator as well, though not as much or not in the same way. However, the "child" is too obsessed with it's fear and dread to be comforted or for their relationship to grow......that's just what I think...of course it has many other interpretations.
