Maybe what Cummings was getting at was developing a relationship with the Self (possibly through love?) remember he was a transcendentalist(look it up if you don't know what that means) "i will wade out...burning flowers...sun in my mouth..leap into the ripe air" getting out of our comfort zones, experiencing things that would otherwise make us feel uncomfortable. "...sleeping curves...fingers of smooth mastery...complete the mystery of my flesh" although i like how sexy the literal interpretation of this line is, perhaps cummings was trying to answer the big question "Why am I here?" no body knows that answer better than you do. and whether the "chasteness" is of sea-girls or seagulls won't matter because they're not very..uh reserved? and the last stanza...probably has different meanings for different. maybe it's self actualization? i love that line "lipping flowers" Lipping is a word he created for the poem. it don't exist so it gives it that extra umph. Bjork's use of this poem..idek i haven't heard the song so it could totally be about touching herself. Sorry for how long this is...I truly truly love this poem and think about it almost everyday. |
