Foals – Bad Habit Lyrics 12 years ago
This is my favourite song off Holy Hire. The lyrics are quite straightforward. It's about addiction. The speaker has a bad habit, maybe drugs or drinking, and he is having a bad influence on his friend or his lover. "You've fallen again, the way I fell before" could either mean a relapse into addiction or that he and his lover got back together. He keeps warning her to stay away, but also hopes that he will one day change his way and things will get better for them.

I like the melody of the lyrics in the chorus. I think that it is one of the most melodic and the most catchy they've ever written. In fact, its bluesy sound and the calling out to God thing made it unlike Foals that we know, but I am liking it. I think they've found a nice balance of style and substance. Watch the CCTV session and you will love this song.

Madonna – This Used To Be My Playground Lyrics 12 years ago
For me, I never read it as an actual playground. As many have mentioned, it is more about innocence and a comfort of being a child when you can run to somewhere or someone who can make it all okay. It's like your safe place. Being adult means that you have to rely on yourself seeing the persons or the things you love grow old and disappear. It always makes me cry when it gets to the part where she sings:

And why do they always say "Don't look back"?
Keep your head held high. Don't ask them why
because life is short.

Both the melody and the lyrics of this part are very emotional. It is sad because we all know it is true. The speaker is struggling to let go of the precious past, while everybody else seems to move on, saying there is no use in lamenting about it. The contrast between reason and sentimentality makes this song stronger and more realistic. Some feelings are not good for us, but we just can't help it. This is my favourite of all Madonna's songs because it captures the universal feeling of nostalgia in a simple and sincere manner.

Death Cab for Cutie – Transatlanticism Lyrics 12 years ago
For me, this song is about a couple is drifting apart. The speaker, who is still in love with his girlfriend/wife, can't do anything but watch the distance between them gradually grow and get filled with silence (water). I particularly like how he uses the imagery of the earth's geographical evolution to describe their relationship. They used to "live on the same land" and be on the same page with each other, but now that the ocean comes between them, they are becoming strangers - foreigners. Their communication has broken down.

I also love the sound of a moving train in the background, which builds out the emotion to the peak in the second half. It gives the feeling of being on a lonely long journey. I think the song is very clever. The prolonged instrumental middle part suggests waiting and longing. The sentence "I need you so much closer" is spoken repetitively, as if in despair, while the music gets more and more intense. This is by far my favourite DCFC song. It makes me want to get on a intercity train on a rainy day

Cyndi Lauper – Girls Just Want To Have Fun Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is liberating in many aspects. The music is full of life. Cyndi's vocal is so piercingly high and bright. The way she sings is so free and effortless, assertive but not aggressive. Even the title that uses the casual "wanna" instead of the formal form "want to", suggesting the sense of a small rebellion. I particularly love that even though it is a cheerful pop song, it has a touch of reality, talking about jobs, adult responsibility and social expectations. It's an anthem of modern women, who are seeking happiness for themselves in the world full of seriousness and restrictions.

Morrissey – The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores Lyrics 13 years ago
I tend to think that this song is about someone who feels that he doesn't belong in this world. The "boy next door" has grown up to be a man who is always angry and maybe anti-social, as he warns "don't stare because he's still there". Although the anti-authority/celebrity sentiment might have come from Morrissey's own view, I don't think it is the gist of the song. On one hand, he hates how things are in the world; on the other hand, he longs for he longs for its acceptance.

What is interesting is the unexpected transformation from the harsh hateful attack towards the public authorities/pop stars (or, those who are well-adjusted and succeed in the society) to something very personal, like the desperate need to be loved by someone. Musically, the melody shifts from the repetitive, whinny sound in the bridge "lamenting policewoman..." to a rather sweet lift-up of "this world is full of crashing bores", to a romantic plea "take me in your arms and love me". The speaker despises the "crashing bores" and yet is not sure if he is one of them. Judging them as inferior, he loathes them but at the same time, he secretly envies them. That perhaps causes his internal conflict.

Morrissey – Let Me Kiss You Lyrics 13 years ago
Well, I think that we need to differentiate Morrissey the person and his persona. I don't think Morrissey himself feels insecure about his appearance. He is, and has always been, a beautiful man and he knows it. It's just that he is mentally drawn to the idea of being the weak, the shy and the miserable. These are the characters that often recur in his songs. In the same way that the narrator in a novel doesn't need to be the author, a song can be half truth and half fiction.

I like this track because the meaning is so sad that it becomes uplifting. While many can sing about loneliness and desperation, only a few can deliver the idea this effectively. To say that you would rather be thought of as someoe else just to get a kiss from someone you love is to frankly accept your defeat as a person. It is a thought so painful to admit. I guess that is why the idea has never been used in a love song before, at least not the ones we normally heard of. My favourite line is 'I heard that you'll try anything twice'. It adds a nasty bite to the whole thing, ridiculing himself and his target at the same time.

The Smiths – I Know It's Over Lyrics 13 years ago
Maybe it's just me, but I always get an odd feeling that the speaker of this song is a young woman. First, it starts with some sort of a sentimental lament. She is feeling devastated and suicidal because her relationship is over. And then, we are told why. Her female lover is forced to marry a man she does not love - "sad veiled bride, please be happy". However, the speaker wishes the couple well and hopes that the future husband will treat her lover well. "She needs you more than she loves you" can mean that the lover is marrying the guy because she wants to be socially accepted, not because she really loves him.

The speaker says that actually "over" is not exactly the right word, as to most people, their relationship has never existed. It was only a secret between the two women. This knowledge gets her even more depressed and she starts mocking herself for being such a loser. I think the whole "if you're clever..." lines are only her imagination that comes from her self-pity. Despite all her charming qualities, she is the one ending up alone, while some "loud, loutish" man gets the girl. The reason why I think that this song is about a lesbian relationship is in the final part: "It's so easy to laugh. It's so easy to hate. It takes strength to be gentle and kind." I feel that these lines suggest that their love is condemned by the society. It is a forbidden one.

It is again emphasised in the conclusion of the song. "Love is natural and real, but not for you, my love. Not tonight, my love" contains an interesting paradox. "Love" in this context may mean a physical act of "love", as the wedding night is mentioned. Sex, which is supposed to be a natural product of love, will not feel natural here because there is no love between the married couple. On the other hand, the love between her and her lover, which although feels natural, is often deemed "unnatural" by the public. The speaker says that the notion of "love" is only reserved for the heterosexuals, not for the people like them - "not for such as you and I".

There is a big chance that I get it all wrong, but to me, it makes sense.

Morrissey – You Have Killed Me Lyrics 13 years ago
To me, here is how I interpret the song. On one level, the speaker views himself as an artist (the director Pasolini) and his lover is like his work of art (Pasolini's film - Accattoni). 'I entered nothing and nothing entered me till you came with the key' can mean that he was apathetic and emotionally isolated. Nothing could affect him, until this person came along and opened him up. 'You did your best but...' is to say that this person did everything to get to him, and then just broke his heart. I think "you have killed me" is more metaphorical than literal. It is just a way of saying he is hurt so badly and yet he is still alive. In the second verse, he again compares himself to another director, saying that his lover will never be a heroine in his film, perhaps because this person has already left him, or because the lover is not worth of being praised. In the outtro, the speaker keeps saying that despite it all, he is willing to forgive his lover, implying that he wants this person to come back. It ends with the romantic desperation that Morrissey is known for.

With that being said, it is hard to overlook many of the homosexual hints in this song, such as the references to (not one but) two openly-gay directors, the obvious pun "entered" and the phallic symbol "the key". Therefore, it is possible that this said lover is indeed a man, although it does not change the meaning of the song or make it only about gay love. I can still see it as a generic love song and it is relatable to anyone.
