The more I think this song is about his personal struggles to find himself and to define himself in the music business as well as in life, the more I am thinking the "martyr in my bed" is referring to himself. He talks about how hard he has worked and yet he isnt as liked as others and that "they come and jack my style". I think that could refer to people coming up behind him and stealing his form of music and putting their names on it. He is a martyr for the cause which is music. He is basically a martyr because he is not recognized for his music or style or lyrics because others steal his stuff and claim it as their own. So he's the martyr...he gave up what should be rightfully his to make others rise to the top and he takes no credit for it. |

I like your point. I also think he has no idea what he stands for and he is trying to figure that out. Maybe the ghost he is talking about is himself. He doesnt know who he is and what he stands for, so to him he is a ghost because he is remembering who he used to be and now he doesnt know who he is or what he believes in. I think this song is about himself as a person and not so much about literal war. |

The one thing I wanted to comment on in your post was about not knowing about the "martyr in my bed" lyric...a martyr is someone who sacrifices themselves for the greater good or just sacrifices themselves for something they believe in. The lyrics right before that one were talking about how he's not for all the hype about standing up for your country and going to war and risking your life. My guess is he thinks war is pointless as the lyrics "I sold my soul for this? I miss my mom and dad for this?" Sounds to me like he thinks war is senseless and I think when he talks about a martyr in his bed he is saying that it doesn't matter that HE'S not the martyr, that HE doesnt believe in giving his life up to war, someone else is.
Just my thoughts..... |
