I was on a jog listening to my Lorde playlist when this song came on. I had never really payed much attention to the lyrics but this time they just clicked in my head. In my interpretation of the lyrics Lorde is describing a cult. From the moment the song starts and she mentions wanting to get out of the clique she is in she describes ritualistic violence/initiation and having a troubled life prior to joining the club/cult "it's not the same as when I was punched in the old days there was enough the card games and ease with the bitter salt of blood" In the line "my mother's love is choking me" she is describing a leader that shows excessive love to his/her followers. This is a method in cults to keep their followers subdued. She also talks about being drugged "take the pill make it too ill the other day I forgot my old address" in cults people are given drugs to the point where portions of their old life are erased. She also talks about trying to escape "Your clothes are soaked and you don't know where to go So drop your chin and take yourself back home And roll out your maps and papers Find out your hiding places again" and she was not successful =(. She then talks about another thing that cults do to people "The only problem that I got with the club Is how you're severed from the people who watched you grow up" this is what some cults do to keep their members from leaving. I love this song because of how upbeat it is and how dark the message behind it is. Overall Lorde's music is amazing. |

| The drug stupor is corelated with oldness since they have to swallow a constant stream of pills to live a little longer. Web of oldness is kinda obvious.I don't know about the furry abominations, but the other stuff is either illness and dreams of something better that turns out to be nothing other than the realityh of batwings. And how real oldness really is. | |
