Porcupine Tree – Even Less Lyrics 12 years ago
I agree about the creepy numbers :). Who'd have thought that pure numbers could scare you?

Porcupine Tree – Fear of a Blank Planet Lyrics 13 years ago
Really? Look up the lyrics of Trains or Prodigal. And there are many others besides. Intentional multiple interpretations ring in any of their songs. And persistent ambiguity in a band's lyrics simply means that they do not possess any artistic insights of their own, instead letting the listeners to find their own interpretations.

Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics 13 years ago
True, lots of musicians of that time left their music to be interpreted by the listeners. And in a way, that's good. But as you mentioned, it just means that the artists tried to cater to the needs of the people at that time, rather than write something concrete and significant. After all, the whole point of being an artist is to convey something of value to the listeners. I don't mind vagueness in the lyrics as long as I get a general idea of what it is that the songwriter is trying to convey.

Porcupine Tree – Prodigal Lyrics 13 years ago
Steven Wilson always intends for his songs to convey multiple meanings; usually two major interpretations. In the case of In Absentia, almost all his songs have an interpretation that is consistent with the theme of the album, plus other, slightly different explanations (which maybe easier to relate to ).

So this song can also be considered to be about how the person is confused about issues like religion and how he is disillusioned with his life in general. He tries to keep his mind occupied through TV, drug abuse and so on; but never finds true satisfaction. This is to the extent that he sometimes contemplates suicide, but in the end always ends up controlling this impulse. This reading of the song can be easily related to by a lot of people and is just as good as the serial killer theme.
