OK, many here need to research this song before trying to figure out what it means, it was not written by Norah Jones, it was written and released prior to her cover of it by Jesse Harris, so it doesn't make any sense to apply the lyrics to her, the lyrics were written by a male about a relationship in his life that he didn't pursue. Jones and her band (with husband) just decided that it would make a good cover song for her, and they were right. |

I think some of you may be reading too much into the song, I don't find any references to death or dying at all. Cat Stevens is an artist as well as a musician, he painted his own album covers. I believe the song is about color, perhaps it does have a 'spiritual' spin, I agree with this comment from the Progarchy website:
“Into White” is, in Stevens’ own recounting, a song about color, and how when the color wheel is spun it turns white. He turns the effect into poetry, surely, much as one might expect from the man who could make such an album and also paint an LP cover that so deftly illustrates his own music. The images he makes in the song are ripe with Green, Brown, Yellow, Blue, Red, and Black, as he renders this waltz-time world a temporal illusion, with “everything emptying into white.” Youth and wisdom and a turning universe reside here" |

I agree with the comments here, the word 'Lilywhite' or 'Lily White' is defined as someone who is 'pure' and without flaws. I believe this is about a man stopping and reflecting on a woman or girl he met in the past who was virtuous and pure of heart that he feels fortunate to have met long ago and hopes to meet again someday, even if is after he has left this world. The strings at the end bring to life the sadness of losing track of someone special who crossed your path and who you have no idea where to find again. |

Not difficult to figure out, ripples never come back means we cannot get our youth back, and the attractiveness of youth is fleeting and should not be taken for granted. The reflection in the water is our self awareness, and also can be a memory of what we used to be like or how we looked years ago. |

Every song with "snow" in the title does not involve cocaine. It is a song I believe written by Mike Rutherford, who's lyrics at the time were "visual", like the earlier Poetry of Peter Gabriel on "A lamb lies down". One reason the group was given the term "Art Rock" along with "Yes" and "ELP". Any way the lyrics reflect visions of the snow, children, the sadness of winter, and our immortality, like the snowman. "Love of all who lie so deep" I thought might mean the love of those who have passed on is what brought us here. |

From reading the lyrics over and over, and those on the entire album I felt this song was about how we could stop nuclear war from happening if we would just listen. "Who will be the last Clown to bring the house down" and "Don't let the Curtain Fall" to me sounds like "which country will be foolish enough to use nuclear weapons, that may lead to our end." and "don't let this happen" |

I think this song, like many lyrics, leave some of the meaning up to the listener. They may be about the various types of criminals, small time and big time (corporate, government), and how all of us are responsible in some way for allowing it, or each of us has committed some type of offense. It is a concept album about crime and society, but I do not think that all the songs are about "Rudy", or that they are that closely linked to one narrative. |
