This is one of Bruce's most lyrically poignant songs. It is highly underrated, and I wish more people knew about because it is an attestation as to why Bruce is arguably the greatest songwriter/storyteller of all time. All my life, I fought that fight The fight that you can't win Every day it just gets harder to live The dream you're believing in We are taught to be overwhelmed with ambition, that nothing is impossible, to believe that anyone in he world can do anything he/she wants. This idea is great in theory, but sometimes our expectations are too lofty, and they get the best of us. Consequentially, we feel like we are living a life of failure, and its harder every day to believe in this "dream" you mind is fixed upon. On a less serious note, I love the line "I Lived a secret I should've kept to myself But I got drunk one night and I told it" - Every time I hear this line I recall stupid things I've done when I've been drunk that I ended up regretting. |

This song has helped me with the emotional fallout of a serious relationship. Just recently, my girlfriend of 2 years abruptly decided to break up with me 3 days before I embarked on the impossible journey of studying for the CPA Exam. For her own selfish reasons, she didn't want to date me when I wouldn't be around very much because I was more committed to something other than her. For the next 3 or 4 months, I was going to be "behind" in the social context of life; spending 10 plus hours a day diligently studying. I promised her that no matter what, I would still make time/room for her in my life, but she wouldn't "wait" for me, as true lover should. This song has made realize that the girl I thought was "the one" was actually not. She refused to be there for me when I "fell behind" and needed her. It makes me feel better about my situation, knowing that there is someone better out there. Thank you Bruce for helping me get through this very difficult time of my life. |
