| Mumford & Sons – Feel the Tide Lyrics | 13 years ago |

As soon as I heard this, it struck me that it was about a couple grieving, possibly for a lost child - maybe a miscarriage or stillbirth. The idea of a woman trying to help her partner grieve, the desolation of the priest at having to lead a ceremony for one so small, reflecting on the waste of life in seeing 'the darkness and light in so much detail'. A man - the grieving father or someone who's witnessed the fallout of the death - turns to his dad, and says 'what if I lost all I had'? Bounding up to the nearest girl is an attempt to forget his pain, embrace the fullness of life. It could be seen as a classic grief reaction. The chorus says to me it's a couple trying to come to terms with their loss - they feel cold inside, but one day the tide will turn, and things will feel better... It's a beautiful song of grief, and the prospect of hope, despite the hole left behind. |
