Phosphorescent – Muchacho's Tune Lyrics 8 years ago
Can't believe there are no comments on this beautiful song.

I think the narrator has a drug problem and is promising his significant other than he will clean up - "I'll fix myself, and come and be with you" - a brilliant line that sums it all up.

Dale Watson – Country My Ass Lyrics 12 years ago
This one's pretty self-explanatory — a direct shot across Nashville's bow. Watson has long been a champion of old-school country and a critic of watered-down faux country that's really just pop music with an accent. (Kenny Chesney, we're looking at you.)

The second verse is likely a reference to Shania Twain, who, in addition to have a nice set of ... wits ... married her producer, Mutt Lange (of Def Leppard fame).

Hank and Lefty are Williams (Sr.) and Frizzell and yes, they're spinning around in their graves every time Brad Paisley and his ilk sing a note.

Vern Gosdin – Set 'Em Up Joe Lyrics 13 years ago
A Victrola is a jukebox that plays records. Hank is Hank Williams (Sr.); Lefty is Lefty Frizzell. Joe, presumably, is the bartender, and "Walking the Floor" is the classic Ernest Tubb song.

Of course, if you looked up this song, you probably already know all that stuff because you're probably middle-aged or a student of classic country music.

George Jones – Still Doin' Time Lyrics 13 years ago
Hard to believe there are no comments on this classic Jones tear-jerker ... the meaning is obvious, but I love the metaphor of a bar as a prison; he's serving a life sentence in there (until he drinks himself to death) for the crime of cheating (and apparently it's two strikes and you're out in this judicial system). Well, it's actually 20 to life, which I suppose means he could get out on good behavior if he agrees to go to AA and sober up after doing 20 years in the Honky Tonk Prison.

Most of us don't think of being in a bar as incarceration, but most of us aren't alcoholics who cheated on their significant others multiple times. Anyway, an "ocean of liquor" is a perfect description for the quantity Jones has put through his liver in his 81 years. How he survived that long is beyond me.

Dire Straits – Romeo And Juliet Lyrics 13 years ago
I once won a woman over by playing this on the guitar on an early date ... and then we were together a long time. It was always sort of "our song" -- and after we broke up, these lines meant something new to me as I spent night after night drinking with the regulars at a neighborhood bar:

And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All do is keep the beat and bad company

The latter line, to me, means the narrator keeps going through the motions of life (perhaps as a musician, literally keeping the beat, or maybe it's just metaphorical) while using drugs, alcohol, one-night stands, you name it, to try and hide the pain. "Bad company" usually means people who are trouble, bad news, lacking character; but it can also be seen as a way of saying Juliet was good company. I don't think "band company" makes as much sense, although maybe the band is itself bad company.

Merle Haggard – Misery and Gin Lyrics 13 years ago
This may be the most heartbreaking song Merle Haggard ever wrote, and that's really saying something. What I like most about it is, unlike nearly all sad country songs about lost love, this one seems to imply that the narrator is the one who ended the relationship. Sometimes it's just as devastating when you're the one doing the leaving -- and afterward, when you're drowning your sorrows every night and "fading fast," you "only have [yourself] to blame."

"Tonight I need that woman again" -- "again" is the key word because he decided at some point he didn't need her. And "What I'd give for my baby to just walk in" is his admission that he was wrong, and he knows it's over and he wishes it wasn't.

By the way, the live version from Anaheim Stadium in 1981 is fantastic -- it was the first song he played at the concert in front of tens of thousands of fans.
