Let me start this monologue by saying people themselves are very confident and egotistical animals. The younger we are the worse it is, think back to your teenage days:). This song has nothing to do with walls, or kings or any sort of old empires, this song is a reflection of himself. When he was young he "used to rule the world" it didn't matter who you were he saw you as being not as good as him. Now notice he says in the "MORNING he sweeps the streets he used to own". This is genius, you see the morning after night is a classic rebirth motif seen all throughout literature going back thousands of years to Plato and the likes. His 'rebirth' was his awakening that he is not the king of anything only himself. He found that his "castles stood on pillars of sand" everything collapsed. One could hypothesize this came from the fallout of a meeting with what one would call a femme fatal but now we are just speculating. Getting to this so called awakening or enlightenment if you will is not easy hence why it was the "WICKED and wild wind" that let him in.(IN being the knowledge he obtained). After this knowledge now people will not look at him the same "People couldn't believe what I've become." This is another timeless motif , yes I said it again, think of Jesus- he was crucified and now the biggest religion in the world is based off his teachings. Carl Jung described the man that has come to this knowledge as the "Cosmic Man" Just so we are all clear that is the protege of Sigmund Freud the most influential Psychologist ever. For someone to deny anything that has been said here I have given plenty of proof for my opinions please do not give into the idea that this song is about an old empire or some detrimental idea that is just an insult to such a genius song writer. |
