Ok I'm going to take a shot at this, I believe that most songs that have been written, have different meanings to whoever is listening to it. This song is very dark and sad about all the people who have come into this life," looking for a sign that the universal minds has written them into the passion play" to quote ian anderson, feeling like everyone is on the stage and you are the only person in the audience, kind of thing, which is the pretender, trying to fit in and find his role and purpose but never finding it, only to give in to the system and become just another number in the rat race scrambling for the almighty dollar, at the same time looking for love to set him or her free from the bondage and prison they have created, only to find they remain as they are, lost, uncertain, desperate never satisfied and just going through the motions just to fit in in an endless routine never feeling free, just another John doe living and dying in this world, no dreams no purpose feeling empty and invisible. Say a prayer for the pretender. |

The give away in this song is the words "I'm new born now" which could mean born again christian. I say this because I can relate, when we try and do this our way and push God away, we start to live by the sword whether we like it or not, we live by our own way, but as we grow and sometimes find out, in this crazy world we can not do it by ourselves, we feel lost and empty and like losers and as much as we think we can create our own destiny, in the end we create our own chaos through our own wants, lusts and desires, We live this for a while until we see our lives self destructing before our very eyes and feel alone, lost, empty wanting to die looking for answers, only then do we cry out for help and use the God and like lady luck ask and you shall receive, seek and you will find. We then realize we can not make it through this life on our own without the one who knows us better than we know ourselves, then we discover the word and it starts to grow inside of us and heals us from within, we feel like we are winning and healing, and never want to return to what we were before. |
