The National – Apartment Story Lyrics 13 years ago
as a post script to my initial comment, i just watched an acoustic version of this song on youtube and if you notice the laptop is playing in the kitchen set they've created - and it has images of nuclear bombs exploding. Depending upon the creative input the band has to the set design for this - I'd think they either suggested this or acquiesced to having it in there, meaning that everyone who thinks this song is about a coming apocalypse is likely correct!

The National – Apartment Story Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm just getting into The National (I know, late to the party) and for some reason the lyrics to this song really resonate with me. My interpretation is that this is about a wedding, a funeral and everything in-between. To me, it's clear he is at a wedding (likely his own) at the start of the song. And maybe its because the narrator feels the need to tell whoever it is that he is with (likely his spouse) that "I can tie my tie all by myself." To me, these words are the most important, and poignant, of the entire song. He's both proud of this fact and using it as a lead in to describe the rest of what he sees as a need to allay fears - his own, his wife's, of growing old and "tired." When he says "We're so disarming" he means that he is, or is trying to be.

The "different day just like this one" to me is the funeral, when you "sleep in your clothes" and everyone comes and is gathered together, similar to a wedding or other lifecycle event.

I love everyone's interpretations - this is a very cool site.
