DCfC frequently talks about the physicality of aging and the very phsyical aspects of life (such as brothers on a hotel bed when he talks about the wrinkles hiding a young boy, and tiny vessels when he mentions bruises/hickeys). I think that they have a hard time having a satisfying understaning of death and the afterlife because they are not able to have a concrete answer as to what comes next (wrinkles are a symptom of aging, hickeys/bruises a symptom of pooling blood). This song is so full of mystery in its interpretation and overall tone that I think its a beautiful representation of the mystery the afterlife is to them. He ties it in to his lover, that it doesn't matter that it is all unknown, good/bad/ugly, he looks forward to discovering it together. |

The first time I heard this song was about a week ago and it is very ironic becauise it describes my current relationship almost perfectly. We have been together for almost seven years and unlike a lot of relationships we have kept our physical connection/sexual desire for each other and lost pretty much everything else that used to define us. I have been told before that he needs more than just a gorgeous woman, which to me is what he is trying to say here. You can have a beautiful physical appearance but without a deeper connection there is no love, and there is nothing special. It is a "cheap and vile" relationship. Sad but true realization for myself. |
