Pixies – All Over The World Lyrics 9 years ago
I find the song very sad; about someone alone, missing out on life through being unable to participate on even the most basic level: "You can't live easily /You can't even speak /Fish all of them speak /All over the world." Finally, this shows that ultimately, "All I am are my thoughts". "Better call the ranger", as if there's someone who can fix this and make everything ok.

"We needed something ... Jefrey (with one 'f') ... took up the chase"

Sounds like Jefrey (sic) is going to try to save us all, yet he still attaches importance to his name being spelt correctly.

Nirvana – Heart-Shaped Box Lyrics 10 years ago
@[TuskegeeBlood:4844] The book 'Come as you Are: The story of Nirvana' is the source of Cobain s "children was cancer" reference. He says that a documentary on this subject INSPIRED the song; in other words it was the first image which was built on to form this work. It is easy to imagine a child in a perspex cot, with a ventillator or other medical equipment attached, sort of trapped in a romantic idea of 'love,' represented by the "heart-shaped box", which is essentially cynical and manipulative, of course.

@[wild_horses724:4843] I think this explanation is accurate. KC was earnest to a fault about feminism. He spoke at length about this song and in relation to others on multiple occasions, as opposed to just brushing off the question with a stack remark someone might be happy enough with if they are stupid enough.

Nirvana – Rape Me Lyrics 10 years ago
The top rated comments, unusually for Nirvana songs, are good for this one, imo. My own feeling about the song was that there was sarcasm to it, to show how ridiculous is the idea 'inviting rape' by her clothes and actions. I think wild_horses724 is closer to the heart of the song, though.

This song definitely shows the strong influence of Cobain of feminist rock musicians such as his friend Kathleen Hannah. As Cobain alluded to in the quote provided here by 'alyssad', these attempts at overtly political statements didn't really come off.

@[flowretro:4842] I don't find this at all convincing. One minute it's Kurt addressing the drug, then you suggest that, ridiculously, the drug is addressing the singer, saying to him 2I don't have a gun", which might have made more sense if you'd interpreted it as "I'm not going to kill you" [but, of course, it did kill him, directly]. What exactly would be the point of this, as a song? Why would it be interesting, either for Kurt or anyone else?

Nirvana – Come As You Are Lyrics 10 years ago
'Come as you are' in well known in the US to be a part of a party invitation meaning 'don't dress up. This singer is address an ex whom he now encourages be comfortable "as a friend".

"Take your time, hurry up/ The choice is yours, don't be late", means to come casually at leisure or more eagerly according to however she feels, but do come —don't miss the chance and let an opportunity for a valued friendship slip.

The mud and bleach stuff is a typical self-effacing sort of goofing around with a literalised interpretation of "come as you are"; at the same time it's touchingly saying it really doesn't matter at all how you come.

"An old enemy" and "memoria" are references, respectively, to the conflicts of the relationship and to happier memories.

"And I swear that I don't have a gun" is, despite the evocation of a less felicitously terminated relationship in Cobain's life, a blackly jocular acknowledgement, after so earnestly asking his ex to drop past hostilities and be friends, that he himself isn't harbouring a desire to avenge what has passed before and tricking her.

This part bears (perhaps directly relevant?) comparison with Bikini Kill's take on a turbulent breaking-up, "It's about being in love/ It's about being in hate/ it's about not wanting to miss you/ It's about wanting you dead".

In view of a Freudian interpretation of "having a gun", the singer may (consciously or otherwise) be referring to the absence of any sexual intentions in inviting the girl to the party. This, of course, may carry a trace of ambiguity, belied by the earlier verses.

That's what this song is about, imo.

Nirvana – Sliver Lyrics 10 years ago
This is a humorous song about the experience of being a baby or an infant. It describes mundane events that are typical for any child but delivers them in a way (not least in the song format itself) that suggests they are highly significant.

Thus, a joke is being made by absurdly having the infant relate his experience directly to the audience, as if he, the infant were the singer. This is indicated in the music video.

Nirvana – You Know You're Right Lyrics 10 years ago
This, unlike most of Cobain's songs, clearly IS about pain; not some generalised 'disaffection' but the specific painful experience of leaving someone. The line "I have never felt so swell" makes precisely this point: he's not depressed he's just pissed off, as anyone should be. What things have inevitably "come to" and what has to be done feels like a physical pain, which simply has to be beared.

The remarks are initially gentle, but become increasingly pointed. The first line of the couplet "No thought was put into this/ I always knew it'd end like this" seems both to disavow that any bad faith, but interpreted in view of the second line it bespeaks how chaotically the relationship started.

Many of the later lines are sardonic and critical of the ex-lover by implication, such as the reference to being on a receiving end of relentless criticism, "I have never failed to fail". Later this becomes a defiant "I have never failed to feel/ Pain", in contrast with "Nothing really bothers her" : "I will move away from here" becomes "I will crawl away from here".

Thus the singer and his ex are increasingly contrasted as the song progresses, emphasising their separateness. To instantiate the process of emotional separation and the 'turning sour' of the relationship so subtly gives the song a weighty emotional impact.

To the same effect, the ex, having been addressed in the second person ("you") to begin with is subsequently addressed in the third person ("she", "her"). This also creates an opening for another person to be addressed in the final verse-chorus, who is probably Frances Bean Cobain, imo.

Nirvana – On a Plain Lyrics 10 years ago
Unsurprisingly, too few people have managed to appreciate to delightful humour of this song. The basic structure, lyrically, is a series of absurd couplets, starting with "I'll start this off/ Without any words".

After a good deal more nonsense the song draws to a close with "Now it's time/ To Make it all clear/ To write off lines/ That don't make sense".The song is clearly a humorous take on attempts at song writing under the influence of alcohol or drugs -effectively, of being drunk or stoned. It's very easy to relate to.

The singer is clearly happy at this time ("I'm on a plain/ I can't complain") but mildly troubled by his enjoyment of his own great facility with compositions (which is, of course, potentially delusory). Finally, realising (with some self-satisfaction) it is impossible to resolve the paradox that he should be concerned about loving "himself better than you", he simply repeats the refrain "I'm on a plain/ I can't complain" endlessly.

Bob Dylan – Not Dark Yet Lyrics 10 years ago
We have a choice, if we'd realise it, between 'darkness' and light. The way things are going, we're heading for the former, which is the default, not necessarily in terms of humanity but yes of the universe. Things are going that way, unmistakeably, towards darkness, in the life of the aged man, but also in that things are getting lost without trace -- a general theme in late Dylan.

Radiohead – Blow Out Lyrics 13 years ago
I just came home from a social evening thinking "I had a blow out" and that reminded me of this song. What happened was I really hardly spoke to anyone the whole time. So I agree that it's about social awkwardness. Anything I might have done in the way of involving myself in what was going on around me just seemed to be destined to kill everything.
TY has apparently said he has suffered bipolar disorder and I think this is to do with the lyrics in this song. When a manic phase (such as I seem to have been in for the last few weeks/months) is fading away it's like all the air coming out of your tyres or something.
"In my mind
And nailed into my heels [=stuck in my shoes, ie unable to put myself in another's place, also not responding quickly enough to what's happening)
All the time killin' what I feel [no flow or life to my feelings)
And everything I touch
(all wrapped up in cotton wool)
(all wrapped up in sugar-coated pills) [all sort of insulated from me, oversensitive to my perhaps harsh, but also crashing mood)
turns to stone"
Just my interpretation.
I agree it's a really nice song -one of those you don't automaticallly think of as great, but it lingers andmakes a very special, unique imprint.
I love Pablo Honey, even if TY doesn't!
