I know this song is quite an oddity on their self-titled album, but I find it to be simply hilarious. It seems obvious to me that they're trying to mock a genre with this song, and not trying to branch out with their sound.

Yeah, this song was just sort of a creative jam session between the two, but apparently they liked the result so much that they decided to work together more, and thus the band was born as a side project.

"Days of the Phoenix" is about the Phoenix Theater, in petaluma, CA (about 30 miles north of SanFrancisco, so its the North bay, not east), which is where this band got its start. The band itself is from Ukiah, CA, also in Sonoma County. Being a Phoenix kid myself (i frequent that venue) and having saeen AFI live many times before they became big, I can certainly verify what this song is about. Many bands have gotten their start at the Phoenix, which is an all ages venue where many local Indie/Punk/Ska/Emo bands have gotten their start.
