This song is about a person who has just found out she only has 24 hours to live. "Been given 24 hours to tie up lose ends to make amends his eyes said it all I started to fall" His eyes are probably a doctors eyes but could be someone else giving her the bad news. But basically at the beginning of the song she finds out she has 24 hours left before she dies. She might be terminally ill or have some infection but either way the doctor has just told her she has 24 hours and she falls. The silence is deafening to her which is just how some people describe a certain feeling in those situations that I don't know how to explain. " heads spinning round no time to sit down just wanted to run and run and run" Head spinning is refrencing the overwhelming feeling and confusion the difficulty comprehending such news. And there is no time to sit because she only has 24 hours to "tie up lose ends and make amends" which is pretty self-explanatory. "Be careful they say don't wish life away now I have one day" Refers to the idea that you shouldn't spend all your time wishing for things and wanting or waiting to get older because you may never get there. You should live in the moment. And she is saying how she had heard it said but she probably didn't really give it much thought till now. "And I can't believe how I've been wasting my time" She is realizing that if she had known she was going to die now she would have used her time more wisely. But of course she didn't know. "In 24 hours they'll be laying flowers on my life it's over tonight I'm not messing, no I need your blessing and your promise to live free please do it for me" Here she is stating again the fact she has a certain amount of time to fix things. She is asking someone for their blessing, probably someone close to her because she is also asking them to promise her that they won't let her death hold them back from living their own life. So she is trying to make sure everything is taken care of before she goes. "Is there a heaven a hell And will I come back Who can tell" She is going through common thoughts that one might go through before death including questioning what will happen to her when she dies. She isn't sure if there is a heaven or a hell or reincarnation or what will happen. "Now I can see What matters to me It's as clear as crystal" Here she is saying she realizes what is most important to her because it's the things she is worried about and the people she is worried about. "The places I've been The people I've seen" She knows what places and people meant the most to her now. "Plans that I made Start to fade The sun's setting gold Thought I would grow old, It wasn't to be" Her time is running out. She thought, like many people do, that she was going to live till she got old and she had plans for this life but unfortunately for some, things happen. Car crashes, illness, accidents, etc that cut life short and take people from this earth before they get to be old. It's not something people think is going to happen though. So she is realizing she isn't so invincible. Those things weren't meant to be for her. "I'm not alone I sense it all that I said i meant it" could be a reference to the feeling that someone or something is with her in spirit. The second part is just telling people she really means what she said it wasn't just something to spit out of her mouth for the hec of it. The rest of the song goes on counting down her hours. The mood is panicked, frightened, and overwhelmed. She is overwhelmed by the knowledge that she is going to die and panicking. What are you supposed to do when someone tells you that you are going to die? Well what most young people would do is freak out. The music and lyrics both give a sense of that panic too like being all over the place and rushing trying to get everything done with this cloud of doom looming over you. It's not suicide because the lyrics and the music indicate she is afraid and she doesn't want this. She thought she was going to grow old. She was wishing for things and wasting time because she thought she was going to have plenty of it. Now she's found out she doesn't have plenty of it. She has nothing set up for her death. She has to do everything in the next 24 hours while trying to make sense of everything and there is no reference to indicate suicide. If it was suicide she would be calmer. She also probably wouldn't be putting so much emphasis on counting down the time and the fear wouldn't be there. People who kill themselves generally experience a sense of calmness right before they do it and the thought of dying once they have made up their minds isn't scary. People might experience some panic but by the time it was an hour before there would be a notable calmness most likely. Also, the "his eyes said it all I started to fall" refrences that someone has given her this news. This wasn't something she decided. It could be someone is making her take her own life but more likely it's something that's killing her. The only other way it could be suicide is if perhaps she took something in a suicide attempt that takes 24 hours to kill and she didn't know and now that some time has passed she is regretting doing it. |

I definitely think this song is about depression. "Once upon a year gone by she saw herself give in every time she closed her eyes she saw what could have been" The girl is thinking about when she first gave in to depression and saying how she sees what her life could have been if she hadn't when she closes her eyes. "Well nothing hurts and nothing bleeds" "When covers tucked in tight." Depression isn't a physical pain. And when she is asleep she is okay. When the covers tucked in tight is a reference to being asleep. There is no pain or blood then. "Finally when the bottom drops she forgets to fight." The bottom dropping is her waking up and having to face her depression again. When shes asleep she isn't depressed. But when she wakes up she is and she doesn't or can''t fight it. "As darkness quickly steals the light That's shined within her eyes" The darkness is the depression. "She slowly swallows all her fear And soothes her mind with lies" She tells herself lies to try to ease the fear caused by the depression. "Well all she wants and all she needs Are reasons to survive" Depressed people often don't feel like they have a reason to be alive. They need to find a reason to help them get better and live. "A day in which the sun will take her artificial light Her light" The artificial light here is anti-depressents. She is saying that when she gets a reason to live she won't need the anti-depressents. She will be able to go on without them. "Don't pretend to hold it in just let it out don't pretend to hold it in just push it out" Saying don't hold in all that's bothering you. She has to let it out. People with depression often "bottle things up" instead of talking about them or relieving the emotion and feeling in a positive healthy way. She is saying that she needs to let these things out. Paradise could be the sleeping or it could be refering to her last day in the hospital. In the hospital she is safe but once she leaves she will have to face the real world again and that can make things difficult so the last day in the hospital is paradise. Either way it's not about abuse. It's about depression. |
