So, in August of 1970, Jerry Garcia's mother was in a car accident which ended up killing her in late September of that same year. "Garcia, who was recording the album American Beauty at the time, often left the sessions to visit his mother with his brother Clifford." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Garcia#Personal_life). When I take that bit of info into account, the lines at the end of each verse make me think of a man who is grieving the imminent (or recent) loss of his mother. Perhaps he recognized that her love for him was a powerful force as it existed before he was even born -- before he understood the concept of love, or music, or aspirations and dreams... Take it with a grain of salt. |
