The story of a love affair that runs its course. It begins in April, with the youthful feeling of spring, and joy.
April - Come she will
June - she'll change her tune
July - she will fly
August - die she must
September -- I'll remember a love once true.

| Paul Simon – Dangling Conversation Lyrics

Haven't seen the movie, but you're on the mark. It is supposed to sound pretentious, a sort of cynical look the intellectual class. Ivory tower types sitting around talking about the meaning of life, the theater, Emily Post, Robert Frost, poetry, and classic literature. They search for meaning in the words of others, but their own lives are empty and meanings. "I can only kiss your shadow, I cannot feel your hand."
