I think maybe the walking around in circles might be a reference to weight loss from cocaine use since the album refers to drug use and weight loss and the music video seems to correspond to that idea (he loses the red sweater- representing his weight and "skips over" the guy eating cereal which is what people do to lose weight). He doesn't have to walk or run around in circles since he lost weight with drugs. Maybe. |

| They Might Be Giants – We Want A Rock Lyrics

I think it's about how materialism is silly. How people just buy stuff because everyone wants it or they just all want it for some reason... like nerdy pet rocks. but then also it gets a bit political saying that socialists don't want people to buy pet rocks but they're saying that's what everyone wants. and then they get into plastic surgery which is a bit more extreme and maybe making a joke about people who try to be things they aren't and maybe wanting to seem smarter with the forehead? whee |

| They Might Be Giants – Don't Let's Start Lyrics

When I heard "don't let's start" I thought "Don't: Let's start" as in don't start a conversation saying "Let's start by" or "Let's" because that's a way to control a conversation by saying "we're going to decide" or just using we forms of words. Just an impression I got from the song.
I interpret it as a girlfriend who sees her boyfriend (the singer) as a "Pet" hence the meow line but he's saying "hey I make all the money here wake up". He's saying Dont: Let's start because I have control over the situation and I don't like that you're kind of slutty. |

| They Might Be Giants – Hide Away Folk Family Lyrics

As odd as it sounds I hear some references to Alanis Morisette. In her song "You oughta know" she references a "cross-eyed bear that you gave to me" and this is the only time I believe I've EVER heard a reference to a cross-eyed bear... maybe. Also, the irony-laced shoes could be a dig at her song "Irony". I have NO idea if this is correct or not but it's just something I was reminded of (this is a 90sish band). Maybe its about how listening to Alanis Morisette inspires domestic turmoil? (Taurus: contemplate domestic turmoil). Maybe the singers were annoyed that her music was everywhere hence people should "hide away" to avoid it? |
