more complicated than just a break up song, i think it's about betrayal ("i thought i know you well, well who can ever say?"). this person has been deeply wounded, and it has made them pessimistic (" a dream of better days was long gone by the way") and question everything ("is there a better place, well who can ever say?", ""i can't define my right from wrong"). the person is searching for answers and closure despite the pain ("who do i blame today?") and at one point is definitely in the denial stage ("if it's over, i don't want to hear it") the chorus to me could mean 2 things... one...that they see pain in themselves and then see it everywhere else too ("who do i name today", references to shot to the brain and knife could be suicide, murder references)...like someone reading the paper or watching the news and can't escape the bad news everywhere. two....it could be that it's the same person getting hurt over and over...a shot to the brain, one more taking the knife, etc could be them being betrayed again and again. |
