MissMortisha is on to something! When I first heard this song back in 1991, I had no idea who or what Jane Mansefield was. But I loved this song, and couldn't figure out the bigger meaning. However, I did decide that if I were to ever have daughters, "Nothing or no one, would ever make me let you down" It seemed like a throwaway. But I was 18, and not at all in the market for a family, so the whole concept of having children was absent. Yet this song still resonated to me as a message to your children. I can't point to the lyrics that made that work in my mind, but I can tell you that since the first time I heard this song, I knew that it was about my relationship with my kids (Hey, I subscribe to the "Reader Response" school of literary criticism! Perhaps my mind can't make the connection, but my heart does. Thanks Mortisha, you managed to connect my disconnected brain, and in so doing, reminded me that I'm blessed to have three beautiful girls (and that I miraculously managed to NOT die in a car accident between the years of 1992-1994). |
