“Yea I know I look worse for the wear. But I have everything at my fingertips. I've been infantilized by a pat on the back and an endless go-ahead. Ain't nothing gonna break my stride. Ain't nothing gonna slow me down. Oh no. When there's no one disapproving.” The writer describes his situation. To “look for the wear” is an idiom for intoxication. Having everything at one’s fingertips refers to behaving according to one’s profession. Keith (the writer) is describing himself as an artist to the fingertips. Keith is in a rock band. Rock bands party. Therefore, Keith parties. And no one is telling him otherwise, which fuels his “infancy” to carouse with reckless abandon. “Yet its women not lack of ambition that keeps good men bedridden. Jesus Christ I am forever making the same mistakes” Keith is a driven artist, a professional of his craft. But he’s always chasing tail and always regretting it because he could be focused on other, more noble endeavors. “I continue to stumble around as long as everyone cheers me on. Am I the only one without the weapon to end the war?” Keith will continue to party. His other song lyrics contain themes of partying and it’s been paying him dividends thus far. So why fix something if it ain’t broke? The “war” is refers to his drinking habits. The “weapon” is the ability to drink in moderation (or completely quit.) But where’s the fun in that? “Deaf men in the city of sirens. Blind men in the presence of snakes.” In Greek mythology, sirens were seductive women who lured sailors to their deaths. Snakes refer to people who are deceptive and sneaky. Keith is talking about how other men are resilient to temptation… “But I'm adrift in a sea of temptation.” …but Keith prefers indulgence. “A newborn with inadequate skills. Turn the party up, honestly be damned.” Can you blame a baby when it shits itself? No. So don’t blame Keith for drinking so much, alright? Fuck off. “How fucking pathetic of me. I can't go this way. Not when I have your heart. Oh what a childish life I have led. God, what a wicked man I have been.” Keith realizes the error of his ways. He’s got a girl who’s faithful and he hasn’t been. And this fact floors Keith, crushes him like a right hook from Kimbo Slice. Now he’s trying to reconcile with himself, turn over a new leaf, and become the righteous man he was always supposed to be. “But ain't nothing gonna break my stride. Ain't nothing gonna slow me down. Oh no. When there's no on disapproving.” Just kidding. |
