It would be great, Riversong, if that were true. But many, many people beyond the rapists themselves have either a victim blaming attitude, or they ignore the problem entirely. That is what is meant by "rape culture". It doesn't specifically refer just to rape, but the male dominated society that lowers women to sexual objects and little more. Women are raised from childhood being told that men are predators, that anyone looking at them could be a potential threat. They can't stay out night, they can't walk in certain places, and should rarely be alone, or else they could easily be another victim. Of course, that comes with the implication that women are at fault for assaults by not heeding these rules. Yet, even when they do, they are harassed. Even something as simple as "catcalling" is quite threatening in a society that doesn't allow women to say "no" (especially considering that men aren't taught these same ideas that women WILL consider them dangerous, so even the good majority of them can overstep the bounds they didn't know exist, marking them a threat). It's a very unfortunate situation, and everyone suffers for it. That's probably not a very good or comprehensive explanation. I'm not an expert. It is important to remember that victim blaming is not confined just to rapists, though. |

| This. So much. Especially that first line. It's a bit conflicting. The song itself is great and catchy, but the lyrics are absolutely disgusting. | |

I can't help but to view this song as a conversation between two people. Somebody troubled by anything at all and the person trying to be there to support them. [It's empty in the valley of your heart The sun, it rises slowly as you walk Away from all the fears And all the faults you've left behind The harvest left no food for you to eat You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see But I have seen the same I know the shame in your defeat But I will hold on hope And I won't let you choke On the noose around your neck] Is the Support basically pointing out that there are troubles and the effects they've had on the Troubled, and saying that it won't stop them from trying to help. Support can see Troubled is on struggling to find a way to recover. Troubled knows they're troubled, and Support will go through Hell to make sure Troubled finds they're way back to stability, if not complete freedom. [And I'll find strength in pain And I will change my ways I'll know my name as it's called again Because I have other things to fill my time You take what is yours and I'll take mine Now let me at the truth Which will refresh my broken mind So tie me to a post and block my ears I can see widows and orphans through my tears I know my call despite my faults And despite my growing fears] This is Troubled trying to accept Support's support. They've recognized Support's intentions and are going to try and help Support, and in turn help themselves. It's hard, but Troubled is going to try. [So come out of your cave walking on your hands And see the world hanging upside down You can understand dependence When you know the maker's land So make your siren's call And sing all you want I will not hear what you have to say] This is Support, again offering advice, and refusing to give in to Troubled's troubles. No matter how bad things are for Troubled, they're going to get through it. [Because I need freedom now And I need to know how To live my life as it's meant to be] Troubled finally starting to break through, basically. This is a pretty minimalist and vague interpretation, but that's how I see it. Thinking of the people who seem to be kicked down by life at every opportunity finally finding the One True Companion who is going to turn them into person they always could have been. |
