I'm surprised no one has got this meaning out of it but it seems obvious to me. It is about someone who wants to kill themselves because they are tired of the way the world is patterning out. And these parts: How about some credit now Where credit is due For the damage that we've done We have brought upon ourselves and others With a slow and vicious gun And although pratfalls can be fun Encores can be fatal Wait just a second now It's not all that bad Are we not having fun You make your mountains of handkerchiefs Where the mascara always runs So be careful when you're done You're bound to get post-natal What did I just hear you say? is the voice of someone trying to make sense of all of the world problems for the person who wants to kill herself. That might just be me though. |

| I think that this song is talking about how people it can seem like there are no positive relationships. And I think that it is also calling out the people who aren't mean for being shy, I think that the word choice for the part "And why do some show no mercy while others are painfully shy?" was intentionally painfully shy rather than just saying nice or kind or something like that. He, to me anyway, is saying there are kind people but they don't express it as opposed to mean people who are just mean. | |
