*** first of all the rest of the lyrics are missing*** rest of the lyrics here http://www.metrolyrics.com/go-it-alone-lyrics-beck.html To me, it sounds like this song is about a boy who is in love with a girl that lives next door, or "over the fence". He is saving up money to buy a ring to ask her to marry him by taking coins from the wishing fountain, which he finds futile ("that was drowning all the cares in the world"). The dogs on the other side of the fence are a symbol for the accessibility of his desire. At first he climbs the fence "just to see the dogs running", but he is "shivering" and too uncertain to go through with it, so he decides to "go it alone". "when [he] get[s] older" the dogs are "standing firm". He's finally worked up the courage, but when he sees he his dream is no longer accessible, he again goes it alone. The story progresses over the years, as he is saving money from the well, and working at her "daddy's coal mine". He is trying to gain the money for the ring and respect from her dad to propose. But alas, he "goes it alone". |
