To me this song is about God. A god that he hasn't found yet but feels Gods absence in his soul, and in this way, also feels his presence. Hence, how can he tell a god that he doesn't know of his love for him?

It could also be a song about a woman who he loves but does not have. She is in his thoughts throughout his most joyous and horrible of times, and moments in between. Unrequited love- the sweetest and most sorrowful of all!

Tim Buckley – Song To The Siren Lyrics 12 years ago
I always thought Song to the Siren to be a profound song, by the general sound of it, yet I never grasped onto its meaning the way I did the other night as I soaked in a bath, after smoking a small joint. Song to the Siren came on my playlist and as I lay there, the song took me away to another world. Without the analysis of words, and just the feel of them, I imagined being at the point of drowning. It is a melancholic yet magical experience being that close to the end of your life. As though you are communicating with the spirit of the earth, this greatly dangerous and mysterious part of the earth, the ocean.
What makes it beautiful is the idea that at the moment of death, a relationship is formed between you and and the ocean. A source of such beauty in life, yet untouchable.
I take it as being about a broken hearted man. He uses the ocean as a metaphor for the feelings that so often accompany a broken heart.
The first verse is about the woman (the sirens) who lure him in. This woman is obviously dangerous and capable of much harm (just as the sirens are in greek mythology)
The last verse of this song is about what action he takes next. Does he continue on living even though every breath he takes is full of pain and despair? ("Should I stand amid the breakers")
Or shall he give into the ocean who calls his name with the promise of a death that will be as comfortable and as deep as an eternal sleep? ("swim to me, swim to me, let me enfold you")
As promising as that deep eternal ocean appears from the breakers, perhaps it holds the very same threat as what the woman represents... promising love, but delivering only loneliness.
(Here I am, here I am, waiting to hold you")

Leonard Cohen – The Stranger Song Lyrics 13 years ago
There is great truth in this song. Unlike many previous comments, I don't believe this woman is so much of a sucker, as she is a dreamer and a 'liver' (Perhaps all three are the same thing ha ha). Just like the man. That is why she is attracted to this type of man because he shares the same attitude towards life. There is no resentment expressed on the woman's behalf, just beautiful symbolism which expresses the realism of life and relationships between people who perhaps are not satisfied with the marriage, kids, and confinement in the white picket fence, until 'death do us part' so to speak. Perhaps they are not interested in merely existing. When people believe in and have goals, dreams, hopes of their own... Whatever they may be... Sacrifice is the name of the game. Just like in a game of poker, you gotta bet big in order to win big. The irony of it all is that this way of life might indeed bring just as much dissatisfaction as the first option.

The beauty about music is that what a song means to one person, is personal and unique to them. I see people trying to be all logical about songs on here and it's funny. "No, this song shouldn't make you feel that". This particular song makes me happy and sad. It makes me think about how lucky the person is for whom this song was written.
Drawing from personal experience, it makes me think of a relationship once desired, once enjoyed, once destructive, once lost, once longed for and now, just gone. There is not much left other than vague memories, at one time tainted with anger and disappointment, and now tainted only with indifference.
The beauty about this song is that it reminds me of what love is, how it feels, and it captures the pleasure and the pain of the experience. Also, the beauty of love is having someone, something to believe in. This song makes me want to be in love again!
