To me it's about how much loving (and losing) someone can change your life. You realise how easy but also empty your life was before you met this person. Everything feels special, they become your world and make you feel alive, so when they leave, you feel lost. I love the line "patch my life up with cellotape", you try to fix your life, but it's not the same. You're back to just existing instead of living, so secretly you'll always wait for this person to return. I think the chorus sounds as if he was letting her go to explore the world and to take advantage of an opportunity, even though he knows he'll miss her badly and feel like a lonely cat with no one to relate to. When I was 16, I listened to The Kooks a lot and this is one of the songs I still love, along with Be Mine, Ask Me, Always Where I Need To Be (not the version on Konk though), Tea&Biscuits and a few others. |

| I just checked the lyrics with those given on the record jacket... "rob him out" is correct, but it really is "bizarre guests of my soul". "mini disastro" is written "miny disastro", "my whole eternity" is "my who eternity", and while she sings "shadow dove", it looks like "dadow dove" in the lyrics (they're handwritten. If anyone wants to have a look: http://oi48.tinypic.com/2h320r9.jpg). Oh and tobacco seems to be written with a capital T. The regular meaning of tobacco makes sense and fits the tea stains, but if it is Tobacco, it might be a reference to something/someone else? Black Moth Super Rainbow's frontman is called Tobacco, but I don't think he released any solo stuff before The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn came out. Probably just me misreading or random capitalisation... | |

I also think it's about nostalgia, but I think the fear of being locked up rather refers to the present situation... When you were young, life was simpler and happier, you had fun with your friends. This may just be over-interpreting, but to me the snakes also seem to represent dark or unwanted thoughts and desires. In youth you were looking for them but couldn't find them because you were innocent (sounds so clichéd, but for me it's just true. As a child I couldn't have come up with the thoughts that bring me down now). These days you find those thoughts that seem worth being judged for, thoughts you do not want to find. You want to talk about them but can't think of anyone but God who would be able to listen without judging you. It feels as if your brain comes up with them against your will, faster than you can think. At the same time, your brain is too slow in thinking about what you want it to. It's constantly running but productive thinking seems impossible. Pulling a carriage is another symbol of how much harder life now feels. The carriage used to be pulled by several horses that took you anywhere you wanted to go. Now they have left to enjoy their own life instead of helping you, and if you want to get on, you have to work hard for it. Dreaming and imagining takes you away from this world and reminds you of how happy you were and could be, so it keeps you alive. |

| This song is so sweet and catchy, both lyrically and musically. It has become the soundtrack to my crush (the kind of boy, though) and I love it because it's so simple and easy to relate to. Dreaming about someone who made you feel alive and hanging on to that feeling... If anyone ever reads this comment, do you know what "one twenty-five" refers to? | |

Hey there, I am also from Germany and understood a few words differently: First of all I think that by Rad she does mean bicycle... If it referred to a wagon's wheel, the dog would bark at the wagon and not an individual wheel, I guess... Anyway, to me clocks ticking and a dog barking at a bicycle are typical background noises of everyday life. I think when someone you love has died, your life stops in a way, at least for a while, so you might want these sounds to stop because they reflect that life outside your head is progressing as normally as ever. Wo immer ich aufschlage find' ich dich: I always understood "aufschlagen" as to crash or fall down, as in "Das Flugzeug schlug auf dem Boden auf und wurde zerstört." (The plane crashed onto the ground and was destroyed.) Opening a photo album does make a lot of sense though, probably more than my interpretation. I always imagined that you felt as if you had lost touch with the ground, were floating through life and wherever you hit the ground and came back to reality, something reminded you of him again. Du fällst im Schatten der Tage als Stille und Stich: I think in this context Stich means stab or sting, the pain you feel when you are reminded of losing him. So I would say: In the shadow of the days you fall as silence and a sting. To me "the shadow of the days" expresses the somber feeling that lingers after the days surrounding his death, the funeral etc. In this atmosphere his memory descends like a veil of silence and pain. Or the shadow might refer to the days having two sides, a regular light everyday-life one that everybody sees, and a second dark shadowed side that only a bereaved person experiences, in which his loss brings silence and pain. Bitte schlag dich aus meinem Kopf: As you said, it basically means please get out of my head. Normally this expression is used as in "Schlag es dir aus dem Kopf!" (schlagen literally means to beat), which means "stop thinking about it". You might say this to someone who keeps thinking or talking about a hopeless idea or plan. So usually, you can only 'schlag' something out of your own head. Saying "Bitte schlag dich aus meinem Kopf" therefore has so much more meaning because it implies that you do not feel in control of your own thoughts. I hope this was somewhat understandable, I just felt the need to comment on how beautifully Anja put this. Lass mich rein, rein, beinhart wie du sein: "Lass mich rein" means let me in, but "Lass mich rein sein" means let me be pure. So you might also translate the line as "Let me in, let me be pure, bone-hard as you." I am at a loss for words to describe how wonderful and touching this song is. Three days ago I saw Soap&Skin in Cologne and it was the most beautiful, emotional and intense concert I ever experienced. Anja seemed like such a sweet humble person and I am grateful that she shares her feelings and her incredibly beautiful honest music. |
