This song is almost definitely about addiction. It's really sad and dreamy. "It's all a part of his plan/it's all in his hands" is a very AA type of message...and then "But I never asked for it..." yeah, no one asks to be an addict. It's a terrible disease. A lot of addicts ask themselves and their respective god/higher power WHY. and I think that's what this song is kind of about...that whole, okay yeah God's got this under control, but seriously, why? And it's a resigned sort of sadness, you can hear it in his voice and in the music. it's beautiful but it's terrible.
oh, and "in the basement" could refer possibly to the church basements where a lot of AA/NA meetings are held, or just a metaphorical basement like man, this sucks. basements are dreary and stuff. |
