Toh Kay – With Any Sort of Certainty Lyrics 12 years ago
This song seems to be, judging by the video released with it, touching on the life of a man suffering from some sort of PTSD.

Did you ever think that we’d be three steps from the ledge?
Contemplating awful things and thinking about the end

Clearly having thought of suicide at some point or another in his life, the only thing keeping this man living through his life is that his friends are able to tell him "with any sort of certainty that there is something to believe."

"[He] really truly honestly without a doubt wants to believe that everything will be alright," but the cruel realities of the world (war, murder, accidental tragedy) are putting him down as quickly as he can bring himself up. As such, he can rely on his friends to remind him that there is something to believe in.

The Gaslight Anthem – We Came to Dance Lyrics 13 years ago
I heard this song three days ago now, and it quickly took the spot in my heart of my favorite song. It's just a genuinely fun, beautiful tale of a man who wants to have a good time with somebody else, and if that's the last night they'll get to have fun on, it'll be just fine, and there's nothing left to do but blow one last kiss to the past, and move along with nothing but fond memories.

Another fantastic line would be "If I'm not your type, then don't tell a soul." It's part of his plans to get everybody around him to get in on the fun, and not care if they wouldn't make a good pair in the long run. Even if that happens, they can still have a smashing time.

I don't know why, but whenever I hear this song, I imagine a sort of outdoor seating restaurant, bar, or cafe with a brick dance floor outside. A waist-high white metal fence surrounds the seating area, and anybody can get in if they want, even if they aren't getting anything. A small local band is playing, sometimes just improvising, making some fun music anybody can enjoy, but once everybody gets up dancing, having a great time, they always fall back to "a song that everybody knows."

I'm pretty sure that it's "Strike up the band, play a song that everybody knows," going along with the theme of just having a good time with everybody around. Badlands could easily be one of those songs, but I get the feeling that this means more of a song that even if people don't know everything about it, it'll be a song that everybody can enjoy, not just a song that speaks to one person.

The song I imagine them striking up the band with would probably be Don't Stop Believing by Journey. I mean, come on. Have you ever heard that song being played where a bunch of people don't join in, regardless of their talent?

Streetlight Manifesto – Down Down Down to Mephisto's Cafe Lyrics 13 years ago
The way I interpret this song, it's a cry out to those people who spend so much time worrying about whether they'll go to Heaven or Hell in the end. This song puts you in the perspective of somebody who knows they won't be going to Heaven, according to Christian beliefs, and he's come to terms with it. He wants to keep on living the way he wants to live, and not spend his time tallying every little sin so he can beg God for forgiveness.

"Believe it's true, we were never meant to fly."
Our lives are so filled with what the Christian church (and many others, mind you) would deem to be unholy and befitting of a sinner destined for Hell. This man understands that fact, and is fully prepared to keep on enjoying his life, despite his unfavorable future.

"We're going down, down, down to Mephisto's Cafe"
In some literature, the Devil is referred to as "Mephisto." Tomas decided to portray Hell as nothing more than a dull place where you are forced to spend your time, unallowed to do anything else. This can also be seen on the cover of the album "99 Songs of Revolution," in which you can see the Devil sipping coffee in a cafe.

"I'd rather see in shades of grey"
"You will never have to choose a side"
Instead of devoting your life to either supporting or combating the beliefs of other people, you should keep living your own life as you wish. You don't have to force people to believe the same things you do, but you also don't have to keep people from believing other things than you do. Sure, you won't have many people to share ideas with you, but the people you associate yourself with surely will have similarities in what they believe, and you can bond on those terms.

One line that sort of leaves me without an actual feeling is "Don't crack, because you might not make it back
And if you do you will be alone and you can't live like that"
If somebody has some more input on this line, I'd greatly appreciate a reply ^-^
