I think there are no comments because the song is a very clear and simple expression, like the image/symbol of the lantern. The narrator tells us to let the lantern illuminated our lives like it did his. The narrator expresses freedom and love as reciprocal conditions. The lyrics have a timeless, proverbial feel, like some ancient wisdom, almost like a little mantra or prayer A great song to start your day with! |

People commenting here are all pretty spot on. I do think the narrator contemplates suicide as a a way out of the monotonous life/slow death thrust upon him. It reminds me of a Flannary O'Conner short story in some respects. I sang this song for years without knowing what the hell he was even saying. Altogether it's a masterpiece. |
