Manchester Orchestra – Shake It Out Lyrics 13 years ago
For the second verse I think that the addiction has claimed another life but this time he has been clean for some time (tired of another and another) in this case hes talking about multiple deaths of friends. ( wasnt really wanted so we bled it out) he didnt want to use again so this time after the funereal when he met up with his friends they cried? drank? talked? but didn't use at his friends house. Most kids play with their neighbors and he said this whole thing started when he was 17 so they were probably over a friends house who was one of the group of users ( over the floor of my neighbors house). Hes now realizing how fragile life is and how definite death is (I could see, God i've never seen something so complete) Hes hoping that his friends see how he is now that hes stopped using for a little bit and hoping they stop using too so they dont have to deal with another death (I am the living ghost of what you need I am everything eternally god just speak)... But he breaks down and uses again... this is made evident through the repeating of the pre-chorus and chorus, which leads us to the bridge of the song. Hes high for the first time in a long time and realizes something needs to give. He doesn't even like the feeling anymore because of all the pain its caused him and he knows he has to stop and give it up for good. Maybe hes so fucked up he literally thinks he sees the lord (I feel the lord come in and peel back all my skin) The guilt is bearing on him so much and he realizes he can't do it on his own any more. He needs help. When he says that YOU cant fix hes talking to himself and saying that HE cant fix it alone. So he turns to the lord for salvation and help. (and felt the weight come in, reveal a bigger mess, that you cant fix) Hes begging for forgiveness and wants this to be the last time he ever uses again and is making a pact with the lord that he will fix himself this time as long as he stays by his side and is making an excuse that the lord will never know how bad the urges were but he wants to be better now (I swear I swear I'll go, Lead me into your home, Dont stop dont ever go, I swear you'll never know) And finally he is begging for the lord to help rid him of his addiction (Oh god you've got to shake it out, You've got to break it out)

PHEW that was a long one. Well thats what I got out of this song and I'm sure many other people got many other things out of it that helped them through some tough times but I think this is what Andy was goin for in this song.

As I posted in a reply above to magicgas this song to me is a person who clearly is struggling with addiction and is looking for salvation at the same time. Chill out you high horse christians and stop being so pessimistic you agnostics YOURE BOTH RIGHT.

Shake it out
god i need another and another and another (and another)
i could feel it now
how i felt the lord in my father in my house

Starting with the first line Shake it out can be referring to going through withdrawals and having the common symptom of shaking or looking for salvation.

God i need another and another..... open your eyes kids he obviously has an addiction and is going through a period of intense craving

I could feel it now how i felt the lord in my fathers house... He most likely lived with his father when he was younger and was brought up with an intense christian believe instilled upon him. His craving for the addiction is now as intense as his belief in the lord was when he was surrounded with all the teachings of the christian life as a child.

i can see
i can see standing
we we're seventeen
make it clean
are you the living ghost of what i need?
are you going to get the best of me?
We will see

I believe he has just seen someone from his past he used to share his addiction with or group of buddies who probably used to shoot up with (i like to think he saw this person/persons at a funereal due to the later lyrics) and seeing this person/persons reminds him of the first time they started experimenting with the addiction (we were seventeen) and he wants to forget those memories (make it clean) and those memories are haunting him and reminding him of how he wants to use again (are you the living ghost of what I need) and he wonders if one day this addiction will take his life too (are you going to get the best of me? we will see)

for my rendition of the next part see my reply to magicgas on page 1

He says Im done | Being done with a funereal | Atleast for now... Lets break these three parts down starting with the middle section. When someone says "Im done with the funerals," they are usually saying im going to change my ways so that my actions wont cause any more deaths... But the twist here is that he is DONE with being done with funerals, (were now onto the first section) meaning hes so addicted to whatever it is (I highly believe heroin in this case) that even though hes seen the worst case scenario (a funereal) and has told him self hes going to stop whatever it is that is causing the deaths, he still has to go back to it because it has such a hold on him. At least for now (the final section). If you've ever known an addict you have heard or seen "one more time wont hurt' "just one more drink" "just one more hit" thats the whole "at least for now" part because he knows he has a problem... he just can't get over the intense urge he has at that moment. To me this song is CLEARLY about someone struggling with an addiction AND searching for salvation at the same time.
