Definitely an incredible, haunting song about the end of the world. Jonathan Meiburg loves birds, so mass deaths of birds would definitely signal the end for him. |

The National – Murder Me Rachael Lyrics

I agree that the narrator is jealous of his ex's new boyfriend, to the point of either imagining or actually committing murder. I always thought that Rachael was the ex, but now that I've read some of these comments I think Rachael might be a friend he's talking to, telling her to murder him because either he caused the breakup or because he killed his ex and/or his ex's new boyfriend. |

Just a fantastic song, I think I get the feeling he's going for here but I can't quite piece together a coherent "meaning". I agree with references to social anxiety, and the wedding/marriage theme seems to work as well. |

The National – 90-Mile Water Wall Lyrics

Others have touched on this, but I think the narrator is in love with a girl that doesn't love him back, she's become the "target" of his affections but never asked for them. He wants to just disappear through a trap door and escape from this situation. He mentions how she tells him she doesn't love him, that she's being serious, but he's not really listening. |

The Mountain Goats – Never Quite Free Lyrics

I've always interpreted this song as being about Death. You can live a good life, work through your problems and trials and come out a better, happier person on the other end, but the specter of your eventual death will always be there, breathing down your neck. We're never quite free of that fear. |
