The Shins – New Slang Lyrics 13 years ago
It sounds like what this song is talking about is a man who is stuck in a lonely town, which he willingly put himself into to try to escape his past. The only person he can think about is his true love, who is now long gone, or with someone else, and now part of him blames himself for not telling her he loved her, and the other part is mad at her for not telling him the same. Heartbreaking... Anyways, that's my opinion. Not that it's necessarily correct. A song can mean what YOU want it to mean.

Five for Fighting – Easy Tonight Lyrics 13 years ago
I just thought about what else this song could be about. Maybe this song is about protection. This song could be about a man who's in love with a woman, but she doesn't have the same feelings for him, maybe even hates him a little. He's aware of how she feels about him, and doesn't want to look desperate. But one night, he hears what sounds like gun shots near her home. He wants to call her, but if there is no real threat, he doesn't want to look like a fool. He puts two dimes in a payphone, and tries to muster up the courage to put in the last niokel.

Again, just my interpretation, and you could switch the role of the guy and girl around as well. It's up to you how you think the story should end, or if it's even a good story. this song means whatever you want it to mean.

Five for Fighting – Easy Tonight Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is about a broken relationship. It sounds like a young couple break up, and the girl was a bit harsh or "sharp' on the guy [You were sharp; Sharp as knives]. The girl, feeling terrible about what she said, attempts to call the guy and get back together. He remembers the girl's harsh words, and decides not to answer, nor to ever see her again [Girl I ain't gonna meet you anywhere]. The girl, completely heartbroken, decides to commit suicide [Shotgun fire, anybody home?]. The guy decides he can't go through life without her, and tries to call her with a payphone... But ends up short on change [Two dimes in the telephone] (most payphones take 25-50 cents). He decides to head to her house, but nothing is there [Could have sworn there was sombody home) except for a suicide note. He then searches for her throughout the night. Even though he is fatigued, he will not stop looking [It's not easy tonight]. We are left with that.

This is just my interpretation. Maybe the the guy and girl in the story are switched around, so that the guy makes the harsh comments and the girl won't answer his calls and so on. Maybe the song doesn't narrarate the song in order. Maybe it does. Who knows? What this means is up to you.
