When I first listened to that song I had no clue what it was all about. But I loved the music so much that I listened to it so many times that I think that i came up with an interpratation that actually makes sense. The song is about a woman and an old lover of hers who is now married. They were lovers and perhaps the reason why they broke up(probably it was his fault cause he thinks she is guilt tripping him) was because they were too cynical("i was hoping we could crack each other up", "i was hoping we could be creamy together") or hard/egoistic people("i too once thought that when proved wrong that i lost somehow,i too once thought I was owed something",) or they were putting their careers on top of everything("you re successful and established sir" she would have said:"i could buy this place and sell it") She is trying to show him that she has changed and that she is not what she used to be("I haven't been eating chicken or meat) and perhaps she did(cause she replied nothing to the head waiter,although back then she would) but he replies "yes,but you've been wearing leather" implying that people don't actually change even if they change some of their habbits. But he justifies her by saying "we're at the top of the food chain" . But he understood that she was trying to show him how much she changed so he also said:"and yes you're still a fine woman" He is trying to show her that the way someone sees things is objective. One is supposed to show compassion for someone who is bleeding,but what if he deserved it cause he hit his child? He was afraid to share that thought cause people might think he was insensitive. He is justifying all the reasons why he is cynical and that's why he remains cynical.He believes that the hman nature is evil("we are fundamentally evil and judgemetal") She ,on the other hand,feels like she is doing something wrong that's why she's trying to change it. She was hoping that either they would both soften up or that they would accept their natures and continue to be hard but in both cases she was hoping that they would end up together. ("i was hoping we could heal each other,I was hoping we could be raw together" which is actually quite controversial. she was hoping that either they would change together or they would still be "raw" together) |
