| I think the line "Patriotism expanded..." began with her becoming an American citizen. ;-) Her feelings about that, about the two nations Canada and America and her (possibly buddistic) view of the rest of the world and her place in it. | |

You Oughta Know is about Dave Coulier. A song where she is angry. Obviously. That has nothing to do with this song. This Grudge is about the man who abused her when she was 14. The same man as in Hands Clean and a dozen more songs. I don't know which songs exactly (in this song she tells there are 11, maybe more now)... If someone knows please tell me. This song is about forgiving and letting go. Maybe mostly forgetting and healing herself. I think she is so so brave! I love her music and lyrics. |

I always thought these lyrics were her interpretation as God. Looking at the situation that angel Seth is in and talking to him... Shepherd to shepherd... I don't know. I don't believe it is about rape. Not about adultery either. I've read an interview with Alanis once where she talked about this song: that it was not one of her best work. That the lyrics don't really mean anything concrete and that she was not in the best of places when she wrote it... |
