The song is about a couple that has been together a very long time. Probably since high school or maybe earlier. When you've been with someone that long you develop a very strong attachment with them. A codependence of some sort. The man's wife/girlfriend/partner has left. Who knows where and for how long. Possibly somewhere as trivial as to the store, or to work for the day, or maybe out of town for a short trip. He can't stand to be without her for even a minute. He needs her. He looks back at when they were younger, young love always has it's share of problems as in jealousy, cheating, and probably money. He feels guilty about it but rationalizes it as to being immature. "I just wanna die without you" means because she is not there he is hurting. In my mind I always picture an elderly gentleman. He could very possibly be sick and home bound. His partner, however, is healthy and takes care of him. This song to me is not about a lost love. It's about a very long love. |

The opening line "When they call your name, will you walk right up, with a smile on your face. Or will you cower in fear with your favorite sweater, with and old love letter?" I always thought that Ryan wrote that for a girl he liked that was up for maybe an award or something, like and Oscar or Grammy. Will she walk up with confidence and accept her award or will she be humble about it.
As for the rest of the song, my interpretation is that the girl is probably some what of a player. He knows she cheating on him, using him, and doesn't really care. He loves her madly and puts up with it because he thinks that eventually she will choose him. He'd rather be treated terribly by her than be without her. It's a song about an unhealthy obsession with someone. |

The song is about being in love and knowing the other person feels the same way, but at the same time, knowing the person well enough to know that they're quite complicated, and probably doesn't know how to handle it. You're opening yourself to them and hoping they reciprocate and at times they do but then pull away. You know they have feelings for you and want to show you, but something holds them back. It's a long and tiresome battle for you but you keep trying because you want them so badly. Though, in truth you know it will never happen. |
