| Placebo – Speak in Tongues Lyrics | 13 years ago |

To me it seems like these two lines, "Like a slave to history and science" "Until the universe is done And the course of time has run" make a very strong religious reference. It seems like he lyrics talk about the love between two people of very different beliefs, possibly science and religion (one of the main rebellions of Brian was against the evangelist church), yet they both tell the same story, just in different tongues. Then, as rem89 said, speaking in tongues could refer to speaking two completely different languages (that of the bible and that of science) and still understanding one another. |

to me this is how music changed his way of expressing himself "had so very much to say" "So many people, I've annoyed. I have to find a middle way, A better way of livin'." In the past he couldn't talk openly. He needed a way of expressing himself but when he used words something always seemed to go wrong In the second verse, in an interview for his album battle for the sun, he explains that he was driven by dreams and a slight delusion to be on stage, and that this madness at age 16 was what pushed him to never giving up despite the obstacles. "No one can take it away from me" It seems pretty obvious, nobody can take his music away from him. "a heart that hurts is a heart that works" And his feelings will forever drive his music, that's why placebo music touches so many fans' hearts (: So authentic <3 |

that's exactly it, placebo doesn't tend to make their song lyrics be so straight forward and direct as to be like "oh, the song is called narcoleptic so it must be about narcolepsy!" In a way I think there's some reference to drug use here too and how that's making him lose reality of the dying relationship, as many drugs cause coma/make you sleep better when used in certain quantities. |

| Placebo – Haemoglobin Lyrics | 13 years ago |

To me this song seems to talk about discrimination in general, how Brian has had a lot of trouble given to him because of his gender, this song covers the issues of homophobia, sexism, sizeism, racism and all these other -isms under the umbrella metaphor of racism (with the whole imagery of being lynched and stuff) and colourblindness. Hemoglobin is the key to a healthy heartbeat, so despite physical differences and the whole world wants some people's disappearance, the basic thing that keeps us alive is the same in all of us. The last line just shows a detachment from this, that this really shouldnt be what keeps us grounded from progress. |

I agree with pragmaticpoetry in their interpretations of the lyrics that they chose, but not in the conclusion to be pulled from it. I think this song is about how destructive relationships are romanticized in our society. For example Twilight, by Stephenie Meyers encourages all the factors of an abusive relationship, intimidation, force, posessiveness... "Sucker love I always find, Someone to bruise and leave behind" could be interpreted as the normality with which people hurt their partners, as if it were an inevitable part of a relationship. Our society encourages relationships formed purely to drive away loneliness and feel like somebody cares, rather than out of love for that specific person. Every you and every me mocks this concept, for example "pucker up for heaven's sake, there's never been so much at stake" questions the importance of looks in partner selection, as if it were the most important thing in the world, which is what the media claims. I've picked apart a clearasil, axe and another advert for teeth whitening procedures (cannot remember the brand) and the message really relates to that song lyric. "if you don't get rid of those pimples you'll never get the girls" "this deodorant is like a magnet for girls" "your wedding can only be perfect if your smile is white enough" On the topic of weddings, "something borrowed, something blue", rather than a cute comment on being together forever is the mockery of all these traditions that are followed in the ceremony to prove to your partner that in 3 years you'll still care for them. It's a beautiful song, in its own way. |
