George Ezra – Spectacular Rival Lyrics 9 years ago
Mr Brown could be a reference to John Brown, Queen Victoria's servant and close friend, and "your majesty" a reference to Queen Victoria herself, but I never thought of their relationship as disturbing, unlike this song, which kind of is...love it, though.

The Kooks – Sway Lyrics 10 years ago
How peculiar...I was reading a passage from Woolf's 'Mrs Dalloway' for uni while listening to this song and just as the song got to the 'I will give it you all' bit, a character killed himself. His last words? "I'll give it you!"

I'm fairly sure the Kooks were not intending to reference 'Mrs Dalloway', but I'm never not going to think of that scene while listening to that bit of 'Sway' now...

Manchester Orchestra – I've Got Friends Lyrics 11 years ago
Even though I found myself thinking the song might be about relationships or drugs, this interpretation makes the most sense to me! I do think you can extend it to relationships too though. I think the protagonist is the sort of person who is always trying to please everyone (friends, girlfriends, family) but they just don't care, they don't care if he doesn't stay around. I do think there is a suicidal element to the song as well...for me, the lines:

'And you and I will find
that when I need you
I need it quickly
in fact you'll never know'

are basically him saying he needs help and quick--he is about to kill himself and he needs his 'friends' to help him, but because they don't see him as a friend in the same way he sees them, they will never know how much they meant to him and how much he needed them at that moment.

Whatever the case, this song is beyond awesome.

Unkle Stiltskin – Undead Anthem Lyrics 11 years ago
Does anyone know what is being said at the beginning of this song? Every time I listen I hear 'Doctor Who' and I'm wondering whether it's an extract from one of the earlier episodes where the Doctor is actually credited as 'Dr Who' or perhaps the TV movie?

Somehow I doubt this but who knows...

Bonnie Tyler – Total Eclipse of the Heart Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this song is bittersweet. I interpret it to be about a couple who dated once when they were young and then didn't see each other for many years, who met up and fell in love all over again. One of the lovers is wistful, thinking about all the years they have been apart, the years that should have been. It's making her 'fall apart'. In the longer version of the song, there's this lyric: 'You'll always be the only boy who wanted me the way that I am.' This suggests the relationship was really strong in the past and that it shouldn't have ended.

I see the chorus as the potential happy ending for this couple.

"And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight
We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
'Cause we'll never be wrong together
We can take it to the end of the line."

So they've been reunited and now they just want to be together 'to the end of the line'. They want to spend the rest of their years together. Their forever’s going to start tonight.

Yes, I am a bit of a romantic...!

OK Go – Get Over It Lyrics 12 years ago
I love this song. Not only is it such a great song to listen to, it's the perfect 'angry' song. When I'm angry with myself for being pathetic over something, I interpret the song to mean it's about someone telling themselves to get over their own issues. When I'm angry at someone else for putting their issues above everyone else's and always complaining, the song's 'get over it' message is an accusation! Right now I'm listening to it for the latter reason...already feeling better :P

Radical Face – Welcome Home Lyrics 12 years ago
I, like someone else, interpreted this song to be about overcoming grief/depression, but I love how it can be interpreted in so many different ways.

Here's how I came to my own personal interpretation:

"Sleep don't visit, so I choke on sun
And the days blur into one
And the backs of my eyes hum with things I've never done"

Insomnia is a symptom of depression. The days blurring into one bit suggests life is a daze for the narrator--he's losing sight of reality. I interpret 'the backs of my eyes hum with things I've never done' as the narrator pretending he leads a different life to escape this dismal reality. He lives in a dream world because the real world is getting too much for him--or isn't enough. Perhaps both things simultaneously.

"Sheets are swaying from an old clothesline
Like a row of captured ghosts over old dead grass
Was never much but we made the most
Welcome home"

I imagine the narrator visiting his old family home. All his family are dead and all that's left are memories (hence 'ghosts'). Perhaps this is why he's depressed in the first place, because he has no family left. It's a bittersweet moment where he remembers how his family had little but 'made the most' of it.

"Ships are launching from my chest
Some have names but most do not
If you find one, please let me know what piece I've lost"

The ship imagery I find more difficult to interpret. Perhaps his chest, his heart, is a port, and the ships represent the people who made his life worthwhile who have left him--people he can remember vividly like family, but perhaps also people from distant memories who he can only remember the faces of but who also had a place in his heart, like friends at nursery. I think the line 'please let me know what piece I've lost' refers to how, when you lose someone or are depressed, you feel like you've lost an important piece of yourself that made you who you are, which ties in with how all the ships (people) leave his port (heart), and leave him alone and depressed.

"Peel the scars from off my back
I don't need them anymore
You can throw them out or keep them in your mason jars
I've come home"

The narrator is determined to rid himself of the scars brought about by the grief/depression--he's trying to fight against it by coming home and facing his demons.

"All my nightmares escaped my head
Bar the door, please don't let them in
You were never supposed to leave
Now my head's splitting at the seams
And I don't know if I can"

He's pushed his nightmares away by pretending they don't exist by barring the door, but now, because he's home, it's all coming back to him--these people he loved were never supposed to leave him, but now they're haunting him and his head feels ready to explode. I think the unfinished sentence, finished, would end with 'breathe'--he can't breathe, because he has been swept off his feet by released emotion brought about by his return home.

"Here, beneath my lungs, I feel your thumbs press into my skin again"

After many years of avoiding his feelings, he now lets them in, and he can feel the people he loves like they are pressing on his heart with their thumbs. Though possibly painful, he is closer to them now than he has ever been in years, so I reckon he's achieved some sort of closure by actually accepting his losses and letting himself feel again.

ABBA – Cassandra Lyrics 12 years ago
Thanks for the interpretation. I wasn't too sure which sister it was--Priam had 50 daughters, didn't he? I've just finished studying the Iliad and learnt a bit about Cassandra in the process but couldn't work out which sister of hers the song was referring too. Thank you for the information on Polyxena!

The Killers – Battle Born Lyrics 12 years ago
It's undoubtedly a song about the USA. I also get allusions to the Trojan War, but that's probably just me and my strange mind! The song reminds me of the Trojan hero Hector, who was very patriotic and died fighting for glory and for his people and family, right by the Trojan wall. But, like I said, that's probably just me. Just thought I'd throw it out there! Whatever the case this is a fantastic song, one of my favourites from the Killers.

Snow Patrol – Making Enemies Lyrics 13 years ago
I think the song is about politics. 'Our man' could be a political leader, the prime minister or president or something (suppose could be a generalisation). Claiming to know things people don't want to hear. Talking about the future but people only really want to know about the present. That's how I interpreted it. Cool song whatever the case :)
