Modest Mouse – This Devil's Workday Lyrics 13 years ago
Brother man Mookah, I really wish I was fortunate enough to have met you in my life at some point. Out of all the people here, in my opinion you are the closest so far to his interpretation of his lyrics. You have done what seemingly few here have done, which is to plug yourself into the mind of Isaac Brock the best you can, and with remarkable accuracy (once again, in my opinion). The only thing that I feel that you are off about is the logs comment. If you listen to his other songs there is a strong vibe that he believes that all of time has already passed, and "those people that you know", not the ones that are gone, but the ones that are here, are already gone too, they just haven't realized it. This life in his opinion I believe is the realization of that fact. All of life before this moment seems as if just a moment, or a collection of memories that amount to the same thing. We are all already gone.

I agree with you that he is almost always being a sarcastic asshole, and I love him for that. But most of your interpretations in my opinion are a complete shot in the dark, especially the one referring to the inspiration. He knows what he is capable us, and wouldn't give a shit what we thought about his creativity. I agree as his music is getting more mainstream it seems to be missing that certain "it factor" that we feel so strongly coming from his earlier music, but I think that since this is his only job he finally came to the conclusion that most musical artists do, and that's "Why not take the extra money?" Song rocks and it one of my favorites.

This is sort of a guess, but I think he was on Jimson Weed, also referred to as the "Devil's Trumpet" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datura_stramonium. Strange coincidence that the name of the song is Devil's Workday, and the first thing we hear is a trumpet. As we all know, Isaac Brock has consumed quite a few hallucinogens in his day, and I think that this song is about his mental processes and the debate that he is always having with himself. He knows that in order to be right you cannot be proven wrong, so he is constantly going out of his way to find flaws in what other people accept to be truth. Through his inability to "sort out" this issue, we have the Devil's Workday.
